Subconscious Processing

Most contemporary text books of neurology and of psychology pay little attention to the function of the cerebellum beyond noting it to be an organ of motor control. A historical overview of research on cerebellar function is presented, from pre-Sherrinton suggestions of sensory and motor function, through the post-Sherrinton and dominant 20 th . Century view of "motor" function, to the 21 st . century perspective of "sensorimotor" function. The intrinsic capability of the cerebellum is briefly considered in terms of: its size/complexity/capacity; its information representation/processing characteristics (with "a particular computational function"); its sensory information processing capability; and, its role in sensorimotor regulatory control. It is suggested that the cerebellum can process sensorimotor stimulus information in a statistical (connectionist type) manner and respond to in on the basis of its own learning based sensorimotor representations, albeit at a "level" that does not necessarily involve cerebral "awareness".

This collected work of Jung’s writings on dreams, provides an in depth look at the workings of the unconscious aspect of the human psyche, and in turn the psyche as a whole.  As most human beings spend nearly half of their lives sleeping, it is quite clear that dreams provide an important role in the overall workings of the human mind.  The Freudian school of psychoanalysis provided a very simplified investigation as to the significance of dreams, frequently labelling much of the symbolism encountered in the non-waking state as repressed wish-fulfilment.  This seems like an oversimplified approach to the unconscious.  Jungian psychoanalysis attached far greater importance to dreams, and that they can reveal a great deal about the psychological and physical state of the dreamer, as well as providing a window into the operations of the collective consciousness of humanity.

There has been little consideration of the interaction of subconscious and conscious thought during purposeful thought and design thinking. The ephemeral, unpredictable characteristics of subconscious thought have only rarely been associated with the linear, rational, linguistically articulated, structured, and memorable characteristics of conscious thought. This paper explores how a subject or situation might be mentally apprehended, structured, interpreted subconsciously, and purposefully developed through a combination of conscious and subconscious thought. It considers how goals arise to focus understanding and resolve a situation, concern, or interest using both conscious rationality, and subconscious exploration of this rationality. It seeks to articulate how purposeful thought and design thinking arise and to formulate targets for conjecture and empirical research on the interaction between subconscious and conscious purposeful thought. Mental operations are outlined and defined in such a way as to re-conceive the process of designing in cognitive terms that should be recognizable to those who design. The objective is to reformulate the practice of designing to enable a deeper understanding of and collaboration between subconscious and conscious thought. The intent is to open the rational doors to memory that restrict design and give better access to the sensed, felt, imagined, fast, and irrationally creative powers of subconscious thought.

Eve’s encounter with ‘the serpent’ was her being made aware of what was more than for mere survival for sustenance and maintenance.

                  Physical and Anatomical-Physiological Fitness
Our need for physical and anatomical-physiological fitness is so that the vessel-body is capable of being a conduit for those intensely focused emotional, ‘seismic’ and ‘eruptive’ activities. That fitness is as much for our bodies needing to handle the physiology of strong emotional pulses which would course through our body 12 , as our need for ambulatory and kinetic mobility.

Our culture has been diverted from these possibilities. In doing kinetic pursuits for the tangible components of a secular and temporal conveniences, then for the feral use of supplying the vibratory energy of transmission and feedback for trans-dimensional signaling: in the absence of ambient noise, we belabor the subconscious by those distractions 13 .

              Having a Sense of One’s Unique Individual Aesthetics
Having a sense of one’s unique individual aesthetics, rather than being a product of a consciously-accepted, imposed aesthetic that’s outside your own experiential aesthetics, hearkens to the exhortations of the Bhagavad Gita 10 . In acting upon one’s aesthetic resonance, one has a stronger emotional feel of an empowered relationship with an entity than something that is externally alien to that entity,  no matter how tolerably it is acknowledged.

That subjective    and esoteric meaning of “manna” for an individual is the ‘jewel-joule’ of energy related to the ontological force which began this epoch in its metaphorical    symbol [of noise] in an explosive bang of insight and that extends organically throughout our anatomy.

The Forer effect is the phenomenon according to which recipients of universal statements posed as personality feedback rate them as accurate descriptions of themselves. The first experiment on this phenomenon was conducted by professor Forer, from whom the effect took eventually the name. Several studies have been done on this effect, pinpointing various factors that do or do not have an effect on the accuracy ratings given by the participants to the universal statements. A previous experiment, directly replicated in the present study, focused on gender differences and feedback source prestige. Both studies provided no evidence that gender or source prestige had an effect on accuracy ratings. Additional concerns and factors implicated in the effect are also discussed.

For such a short book, there is a huge amount of information to process. This information and its analysis will alter the readers perception of the current scientific paradigm of realism and accept the needed paradigm of Idealism. Significant subconscious processes in purposeful thought have not been defined in a practically useful theory that could be readily learned and applied by individuals, collaborating groups, or organizations and that could serve as a scaffolding for organizing, analyzing, synthesizing and applying prior research regarding purposeful thought and design thinking in many fields. As a consequence, there is no basis for scientific discrimination or practical assessment of hidden thinking where goals are broader than identifying and locating such events. The purpose of this paper is to suggest definitions that fit A Model of Design Thinking as a basis for evaluating the validity of the theory and its potential to afford such a scaffolding.

In this paper Intuition, Imagination, and Insight are defined and located in the systematic framework of A Theory of Design Thinking. 1 Recognition, Processing, Judgment and Recall are also given definition as subconscious processes in this framework for the focused collaboration of different modes of thought. The roles that these subconscious cognitive devices play in purposeful thought are suggested to afford a foundation for future research and a better understanding of the relationships between subconscious and conscious design thinking.

Having previously read Freud's cold clinical analysis of the uncanny, or what Jung would term  as synchronicity, I felt that Freud too swiftly condemns synchronous events which stir our unconscious mind as coincidence and the result of an over active 'subconscious'. Once the positivistic/escapist interpretation that human consciousness is epiphenomenal, i.e., accidental, is dismissed there are two possible approaches to the scientific study of consciousness. Bottom-up consciousness, from the individual organism or being to the universe, and Consciousness from the top-down, from the universe to the individual. These two approaches mark the outer boundaries of the present scientific search for a theoretical model of consciousness, even though Consciousness goes beyond science and moves into the realm of metaphysics. In any case, everything in between these two approaches is seriously muddled and clouded with speculations and metatheories that cannot be possible, which is common to the period preceding a scientific revolution. Some of those speculations and metatheories sound rather esoteric and even spiritual, which allows them to appeal to many people, but they would normally be considered non-scientific by definition if they were expressed for anything other than consciousness, which in itself presents a total mystery to science and the scientists who are willing to attempt to explain consciousness. On the other hand, what little concrete information science has at its disposal about consciousness does seem to match ideas in eastern mystical thought and in some cases earlier western ideas in Natural Philosophy that have been rejected by science, which further muddles the scientific quest for understanding consciousness. These ideas and concepts fit the qualitative aspects of mind that science normally associates with consciousness even better as well as the direct characteristics of consciousness, at least to the extent that such characteristics are known. Science needs to find a balance between them so it can maximize the effect of the next scientific revolution as well as the corresponding evolutionary leap in consciousness that is coming, but physics must simultaneously develop a working unified field theory to better define the universe in which consciousness of any kind, shape or form can and has developed.

I used to think my essence was somehow housed or self-contained in what Star Trek's V'ger character sarcastically called a "carbon unit," that is dwelling somewhere among my circulatory, skeletal, respiratory, and nervous systems. Now I know better.

Equanimity during mindfulness meditation is considered in relation to some examples of repetitive thinking, including rumination and worry. It may not always be possible to treat the content of the automatic stream of primary process thinking with equanimity, and some implications in relation to mental health and the value of psychotherapy are noted. Aspects of the meditation state are considered in relation to some aspects of the creative process, including incubation and insight.

Julian Jaynes never developed a full-fledged therapeutic system that explained how conscious interiority might be utilized for self-change and personal growth. However, he noted that if the nature of conscious interiority were better theorized, its therapeutic potential could be understood and applied.

In this introduction to Jaynesian psychotherapeutics we will lay the groundwork for further explorations by examining: (1) consciousless mentation (“unconscious” or “subconscious”); (2) the inherent self-healing potential of the features of conscious interiority; (3) the role of mental imagery in healing and everyday life; (4) hypnotherapy or suspending subjective introspectable self-awareness to increase suggestibility; (5) the uses of metaphors to reframe and better process our experiences; and (6) emotions as consciously interiorized feelings and affects that can distort our thinking.

Warum habe ich diesem Buch (in der Originalausgabe) den Titel "The Understanding of the Brain" gegeben? Ich erhebe natürlich keinen Anspruch auf ein endgültiges und vollständiges Verstehen. Dies liegt in unabsehbarer Zukunft und mag sogar paradox sein - ein Gehirn, das ein Gehirn vollständig versteht.

Notwendigerweise wird diese persönliche Mitteilung, was ihre Ausführung und die Festlegung des Schwerpunktes anbelangt, voreingenommen sein. Ich versuche hier ein Buch zu schreiben, das kurzerhand durchgelesen werden kann und das eine Vorstellung von vielen Aspekten der Hirnforschung geben wird, von denen ich glaube, dass sie einige der für das weiter vordringende Unternehmen der Hirnforschung und auch für die begrifflichen Entwicklungen in den verwandten Disziplinen Psychologie und Philosophie grundlegende Ideen bietet. Ich habe aber versucht, einen Text zu verfassen, der so einfach zu lesen ist, dass er zum Beispiel für einen Oberschüler fassbar sein sollte.

Dieses Buch ist nicht als Lehrbuch oder Nachschlagewerk zu betrachten. Eher ist es eine persönliche Mitteilung, in der ich über diejenigen Aspekte des Gehirns schreibe, die für mich von besonderem Interesse sind und von denen ich denke, dass sie wesentlich für jegliches Verständnis dafür sind, wie das Gehirn seine wundervollen und vielfältigen Funktionen ausführen kann.

Ich glaube, dass wir älteren Wissenschaftler verpflichtet sind, unsere wissenschaftlichen Ideen an eine so breite Zuhörerschaft wie irgend möglich weiterzugeben.

A general definition of consciousness that accommodates most views (Vimal, 2010b) is: " 'consciousness is a mental aspect of a system or a process, which is a conscious experience, a conscious function, or both depending on the context and particular bias (e.g. metaphysical assumptions)', where experiences can be conscious experiences and/or non-conscious experiences and functions can be conscious functions and/or non-conscious functions that include qualities of objects. These are a posteriori definitions because they are based on observations and the categorization." Non-conscious experiences are equivalent to relevant proto-experiences and nonconscious functions are equivalent to related proto-functions at various levels as these terms are precursors of respective conscious subjective experiences and conscious functions aspect of consciousness. The non-conscious experiences and non-conscious functions may be considered as a part of the definition of mind and/or awareness. My congratulations to Gregory Nixon for a very thorough and sophisticated essay, and my apologies for the rather hasty attempt to provide a hopefully relevant comment, for which opportunity I am grateful.

Betrachtet man die Debatten zur zeitgenössischen Judenfeindschaft genauer, zeigt sich, dass je Verschiedenes gemeint ist und mindestens drei Bedeutungen von »latent« unterschieden werden müssen, weil jeweils andere Gegenstrategien nötig sind. Eines ist allerdings sicher: Neu ist keine der Varianten. Die Phänomene, um die es geht, wurden schon lange vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg so bezeichnet und als Problem wahrgenommen.

Unlike repression, a key Freudian concept and psychodynamic defense mechanism in which distressing thoughts are prevented from rising to the level of conscious awareness, “suppression” means to consciously force unwanted information out of our awareness. In other words, suppression means to intentionally choose to not indulge in what is ordinarily accessible even though we can be aware of it—thoughts, feelings, actions. Suppression, another feature of conscious interiority, is the psychological analog of repugnance, disgust, or physically turning away from what we find annoying. In order to understand suppression, we need to address “where” unwanted thoughts are placed, i.e., the nonconscious. Coming to terms with conscious-less processes allows us to recognize hidden aspects of our own background and identity and their impact on others. Specifically, coming to terms with one’s biases, preferences, likes, and dislikes (which may not be obvious to ourselves) can be a daunting challenge but one needed in order for self-improvement.

Purpose: This paper examines a neglected stream of literature in marketing theory which engaged with the idea that there was more to consumer behavior than conscious and rational thought.

Design/methodology/approach: This is a close reading of the core themes that appear in William A. Shryer’s work. Linkages are made to other pertinent sources. 

Findings: We extend McMahon’s (1972) study and offer a different reading of Shryer’s writing to that proffered in recent commentary by Tadajewski (2019), focusing on the managerial side of Shryer’s publications, connecting this to the theoretically innovative foundations based on normal and abnormal psychology. We respond to the suggestion proposed by McMahon (1972) that Shryer was an early pioneer of motivation research, largely in the affirmative.       

Originality/value: We provide an alternative interpretation of Shryer’s writing, connecting this to an emergent “advertising science” and subsequently to contemporary strands of literature that have a “family resemblance” to his contributions. These include salient aspects of motivation research; crowd and habitual behavior; mindlessness and social cognition; and finally, empirical examinations of cumulative value theory.

This article reorients the conceptual architecture of marketing theory. It is proposed that marketing is the dynamic force that economists and sociologists seek to explain the centrality of habit in everyday life. Questioning the arguments proffered by these twin disciplines, we submit that these processes of habit formation are not 'undesigned' or 'hidden', but perfectly visible and articulated by theorists and practitioners alike. These debates are complex. We outline their 'strategic logic', tracking the constitutive function of the discourse of habit. We unravel the theorized processes of habit formation as these are emplaced at the subconscious level and conceptualized via the 'subconscious self'. Theoretically, we account for these power relations by uniting the concepts of biopolitics and anatomo-politics in terms of 'bio-anatomopolitics'. Marketing , therefore, must be considered a disciplinary vehicle oriented towards habit creation and the destabilization of inertia.

The work of Carl Jung is a process of constant searching, a wonderful alchemy between Analytical Psychology, Anthropology and Philosophy which has given us such interesting concepts as “the collective unconscious”, “archetypes”, “synchronicity” and the foundation of a spiritual legacy where you can find a whole crucible of ideas. When we talk about famous psychologists, the first one that most people think of is the iconic Sigmund Freud. However, for many, it was Carl Gustav Jung who managed to leave a much deeper imprint in the study of the personality and the human psyche. And part of that was because of Jung’s spiritual awakening.

It must be said that even though Jung worked closely with Sigmund Freud for years, the latter’s focus on sexuality as a relevant factor in human behavior was always a difficult pill to swallow for the Swiss psychiatrist.
In the extraordinary mind of this free thinker, the founder of Analytical Psychology, there were many more concerns that went beyond the theoretical fundamentals that Freud moved in. Despite being a practicing clinical psychologist, well versed in its theory too, he devoted most of his life to exploring other realms. He got wrapped up in Eastern and Western philosophy, arts, literature, astrology, sociology and even alchemy.
A legacy of fascinating knowledge and here’s how it all came about…

C. G Jung once said that human beings are born three times. The first is the real physical birth. The second occurs with the development of the ego, and the third is what leads to the birth of what he called “spiritual consciousness.” According to Jung, this last birth will never happen if the person focuses exclusively on the ego, on its conditioning and on our rigid unresponsive mental patterns.

It seems that Jung himself experienced this third awakening as a child thanks to a strange, symbolic and fascinating dream. In it was a large room with a red carpet with a strange being lying flat out on it. It was a tree-like monster that sported an immense eye in the middle of his forehead. It had the skin of a man and barely reacted when little Gustav Jung approached him. However, he was soon able to hear his mother’s voice shouting at him from a nearby grave, telling him not to approach the monster because it was “the eater of men“.

Although at first he took the dream to be more of a terrible nightmare, it soon awakened in him a deep interest in the world of the surreal and its symbolism. Years later he was aware that this dream was like a call, a direct invitation to investigate what psychoanalysts would later call “the unconscious“.

Jung’s Spiritual Awakening
Although the clinical approach that C. Gustav Jung worked with was based on a very theoretical psychiatry, it was always clear to him that he didn’t want to stay within that limited vision of human knowledge. He soon incorporated roots of anthropology, concepts of art and spirituality into his theories, as well as the cultural legacy which hid revealing ideas about the realm of the unconscious.

Jung studied Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Gnosticism, Taoism and other traditions in depth, because, for him, the spiritual life constituted the very root of psychic life.
One of its backbones was that to understand the human mind we also have to study its products.
In turn, he maintained on multiple occasions that all spiritual experiences were essential to promote our well-being, something which Sigmund Freud didn’t agree with.
In 1944 Jung published “Psychology and Alchemy” to show how many hidden symbols used by alchemists are hidden in many of our most common dreams, as well as mythological images that are rooted in our subconscious.
With these ideas, Jung reinforced the universal character of his theory of the archetype, by also making a valuable defense of spirituality as a tool to improve the psychic health of modern man.

Jung and his study of mandalas
C. G Jung, in his infinite passion for knowledge rooted in our ancient cultures, didn’t take long to discover the psychological effects of the mandalas, while he was studying Eastern religion.

As he explained on numerous occasions, the mandala corresponds to a sacred geometric design capable of provoking something positive as well as therapeutic in our inner being.
Every figure with a circle shape is not only representative of the cosmos, it is also a direct invitation for us to listen to our being, to restore harmony and to favor growth and an awakening.
Jung used the mandalas with his patients to help them listen to their inner voice. It was a way to decentralize the ego, to break the murmuring of obsessive thoughts so that the person could find new routes of liberation and come to a new state of consciousness.

To conclude, the legacy of Carl Gustav Jung is undoubtedly one of the most vast and richest in terms of knowledge, approaches and conceptions. Although his theoretical contributions are still very present in the field of psychoanalysis, to this day there are many who prefer to focus only on his spiritualist ideals.

We would like to invite you to get to know the full range of his work,  missing none of it. Books like “The Red Book“, “Man and his symbols” or “Memories, dreams, thoughts” are testimonies of a multidisciplinary approach, a melting pot of knowledge and awakenings that today continue to inspire everyone, whether they be experts, laymen or simply inquisitive.
