Twentieth Century (History)

All too often, depoliticization is reduced to a very recent phenomenon, an effect of ‘Neoliberalism’. In a workshop to be held in Nijmegen on April 1-2, 2022, organized by Adriejan van Veen (Nijmegen) and myself, we aim to place the concept in a wider historical perspective. On the basis of a broad spectrum of European cases from the late eighteenth century until today, depoliticization no longer appears as a monolithic and autonomous process, but rather as a complex bundle of practices and discourses contesting the boundaries of the political sphere.

County and local magazines are flourishing, unlike the regional newspaper press. But where did these publications come from? This paper begins to map the history of the magazine outside London, with a focus on twentieth-century county magazines.
After suggesting some definitions to differentiate between periodicals and newspapers, and between national publications produced outside London and those with local content, this paper offers a timeline and a typology from the early nineteenth century to the present day, with illustrative examples. It then focuses on the development of the county magazine as we know it today, beginning with the Sussex County Magazine in the 1920s, and the output of the largest mid-century publisher of this genre, English Life Publications of Derby, working in collaboration with rural development agencies. The editors and contributors of these publications included novelists, poets and personnel from national magazines, such as JB Priestley, Raymond Postgate (founder member of the British Communist Party and founder of the Good Food Guide), and the northern editor of Picture Post.
Factors in the success of the twentieth-century provincial magazine are examined, including the decline of the regional morning newspaper, the growing interest in the countryside, and the post-war boom. While this history does not challenge the supremacy of London as a magazine publishing centre, it does highlight the reader appeal and commercial value of local identities and sense of place in this fascinating and neglected sector of magazine publishing.

A history of the twentieth century is a history of hunger. Although modernity brought with it improved technical and logistical means of eliminating famine, nevertheless the century saw the greatest number of famine deaths in history. Famine-related mortality—not all from starvation—has been variously estimated, but a total of seventy-five million seems very likely. There has been some improvement. As Devereux points out, famines have now been absent from Europe for sixty years, from East Asia for fifty years (discounting the unique circumstances of North Korea), and from South East Asia in the thirty years since the horrors of Pol Pot’s
regime in Cambodia.3It is Africa where the problem has continued to be most troublesome in a post-colonial era of conflict and poor governance. Yet at the time of writing, among the fabulous wealth that has been created worldwide, there are still 857 million people chronically hungry—about one in seven, and rising.

In this paper I argue that the increase in the size of the Federal Government in the early twentieth century came about by a combination of a desire by the American public for reform and a perception that the Federal Government was the best agent for this reform.

Before 1939, around 200,000 young unemployed men entered government work camps in Britain. By comparison with Germany or the USA in the same period, this was a relatively small scale operation. The purposes and architecture of the initiative was, though, remarkably similar. The paper examines the origins of the British system, looks back to earlier experiences of labour colonies, discusses the brief period of compulsory recruitment under the second Labouor government, and evaluates its impact on interwar unemployment (concluding that it was negligible).

Svědectví pamětníka je nezastupitelným a velice hodnotným doplňkem běžné výuky dějepisu a dalších předmětů na 2. stupni ZŠ i na různých typech středních škol. Svědectví umožňuje personalizaci „velké historie“, žáci a studenti se s konkrétním člověkem a jeho prožitky mohou lépe identifikovat, do vzdělávacího procesu vstupují emoce, což prokazatelně zvyšuje jeho účinnost. Nevyhnutelně se však blíží doba, kdy už nebude možné zvát pamětníky přímo do škol a dalších institucí – už dnes zbývá jen velice málo lidí, kteří v dospělém věku prožili 2. světovou válku a události s ní spjaté. Je tedy třeba zjišťovat možnosti a metody alternativních postupů, které mohou alespoň částečně přítomnost živého pamětníka ve třídě v budoucnu nahradit. Archiv vizuální historie Institutu USC Shoah Foundation je unikátní sbírkou takřka 52 000 audiovi­zuálních záznamů rozhovorů s pamětníky a přeživšími holocaustu, které byly natočeny během 2. poloviny 90. let v 56 zemích a 32 jazycích (v češtině a slovenštině je přes 1 000 rozhovorů). Archiv je možno prohledávat pomocí propracovaného uživatelského rozhraní: uživatelé mohou najít konkrétní úseky svědectví podle svého zájmu díky tezauru 55 000 hierarchicky uspořádaných klíčových slov, témat, událostí, jmen osob, míst atd. Praha je jedním z pěti evropských měst, kde se lze k obsahu licencovaného archivu připojit, a to z počítačů v Centru vizuální historie Malach při Matematicko-fyzikální fakultě Univerzity Karlovy. Také práce s podobným on-line archivem v reálném čase je dalším specifickým vzdělávacím postupem, který u žáků rozvíjí samostatnost, myšlení v souvislostech a kritický přístup k pramenům a informačním zdrojům. Za tímto účelem vznikl také nový edukační portál IWitness, který bude v příspěvku rovněž představen.
