We report the first confirmed evidence of a feral introduced population of Brotogeris versicolorus (Statius Müller, 1776) in Guayaquil city, Ecuador, as part of the World Parrot Count led by City Parrots. A total of 216 individuals were counted, at two places within the city, but no direct evidence of breeding was found. A previously unpublished photograph suggesting nesting activity is also presented, along with brief comments on previous and additional observations and the conservation implications of this recently established feral species.

This study investigated the effect of crude oil pollution and remediation on the fungi and bacteria communities of M. indica and E. guineensis rhizospheres using three sites - Unpolluted Site (UPS), Polluted and Treated Site (PTS), and Polluted and Untreated Site (PUS). Population of fungi in both M. indica and E. guineensis rhizospheres was highest in UPS while the bacteria population was highest in PUS and UPS in M. indica and E. guineensis rhizospheres, respectively. The highest similarity in fungi species was observed between UPS/PTS (67%) and PTS/PUS (87%) in M. indica and E. guineensis rhizospheres, respectively. Similarity in bacteria species was highest between UPS/PTS (50%) in M. indica rhizosphere while it was highest between UPS/PUS (60%) and PTS/PUS (60%) in E. guineensis rhizosphere. The diversity of fungi was highest at UPS in both M. indica (H ꞊ 1.04; Simpson 1-D ꞊ 0.63) and E. guineensis (H ꞊ 1.17; Simpson 1-D ꞊ 0.67) rhizospheres. Bacteria diversity in M. indica rhizosphere was highest in PUS (H ꞊ 0.70) when Shannon-Wiener index was used but highest in PTS (Simpson 1-D ꞊ 0.42) when Simpson index was used; and highest in PTS (H ꞊ 039; Simpson 1-D ꞊ 0.20) for E. guineensis rhizosphere. Most of the evaluated attributes compared better in UPS; however, bacteria population and diversity in M. indica rhizosphere was highest in PUS and PTS, respectively. The recolonization of human-dominated landscapes by large carnivores has been followed with considerable scientific interest; however, little is known about their interactive effect on ungulate foraging behavior. This study compared the risks imposed by humans and lynx on ungulate foraging behavior by examining the effects of browsing intensity (at two spatial scales), diet quality, and tree species selection. We hypothesized that: (1) in areas with high risk imposed by humans and lynx browsing intensity would be reduced; (2) risk Dries P. J. This research paper is an account and analysis of English media reporting on wildlife conservation and protected areas (PAs) in Maharashtra, India, between 1994 and 2015.  It is based on 269 articles that first appeared in the media and were then edited for publication in the ‘Protected Area Update’.  The analysis attempts to draw out significant themes that the media deems important in matters of wildlife conservation.  Themes that emerge prominently are related to issues of land, displacement of people, development projects, and tourism.  We also discovered that some PAs like the Sanjay Gandhi National Park and the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve receive disproportionately large media space, while a third of the PAs were not reported on at all.  This does not imply that these areas were not reported in the larger media that the newsletter draws upon, but points to the skewed coverage and (limited) importance these PAs get.  We argue that media content analysis is a useful tool because the media is the first interface for the general public on issues of wildlife conservation and plays an important role in shaping public opinion.  To our knowledge, this is the first such state-wide study of media reporting of wildlife conservation issues; it provides important insights into the wildlife conservation discourse in the country as well as the concerns, priorities, and challenges of the media.

Most uses of computers in fisheries science can be categorized as:  (1) data tabulation, processing, and analysis;  (2) automated and semi-automated monitoring systems;  (3) educational, especially at the university level;  (4) simulation to evaluate management strategies; (5)  simulation to learn basic system properties, especially ecological interrelationships;  or (6) facilitation of numerical analysis.  A problem in renewable natural resource management is determining when and how the use of computer technology is warranted.

Emphasis is on current and controversial North American and international ecological policy issues.  Primary focus is exploring the role of scientists, technocrats, elected and appointed officials, the public, and interest/advocacy groups in ecological policy analysis and implementation.  Specific topics and case studies considered are:  (1) basic principles of policy analysis;  (2) managing wildfire on public lands;  (3) balancing competing demands for scarce water supplies;  (4) managing large predatory wildlife, especially wolves, cougars, and grizzlies;  (5) recovering and sustaining wild salmon runs;  (6) determining appropriate use of genetically modified organisms;  (7) resolving multiple use conflicts in managing public forests;  (8) tackling human-caused climate change;  (9) assessing the political clashes over whaling and other marine mammals;  and (10) unscrambling conflict and controversy over marine protected areas and ecosystem management.

Where animals are trapped, poisoned, hunted, or shot in order to kill them,
the welfare may be only slightly affected before the animal dies, or it may be very poor indeed.
A conclusion from the rather widespread poor welfare in zoos is, firstly that the welfare of some animals is too poor in zoos to justify keeping them and secondly, that zoos should keep other animals only when the negative aspect of rather poor welfare is adequately counterbalanced by the positive value of zoos. In my opinion, the major value of zoos is in education. People who experience animals in zoos, especially in good conditions, are more likely to care about animals including their conservation. The major impact of zoos on conservation is via education. The direct impact of zoos on conservation in the wild is negligible for most species. In only a few species has the wild population been affected by zoo breeding. Breeding is better done in specialist places with no public access. A further positive aspect of zoos is that they have therapeutic benefits for people who feel better because of contact with the animals.
