How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

Boy I really envy y'all with chickens that get grass and all kinds of organic matter to scratch around in.

Our chickens get this:

😒

It makes cleaning their pens super easy, and the chickens have all the grit and dust baths they want. On the other hand, we have to provide them with plants and insects plus make sure they have interesting stuff enough to interact with. Otherwise I think they'd die of boredom!
But I also get 6 months of this:

Might as well be a desert.

Thankfully they have the whole barn to destroy each day 😁, hide eggs away from me, and eat horse poop until I get it removed from the stalls!

Oooo yummy!

I left 1 area in my backyard goes wild and I let my flock in 1 a day to play and catch whatever insects. My chicken runs are just bare dirt, I also throw in trimming and cutting in their run to give it a bit of green. I did grow some plants in the chicken runs, but that did not work well with chickens. However my turmeric plants and ginger plants survived ..barely, they peck at those leaf..

It is not possible to have green in the chicken runs as they will mowed it down in no time at all. :)

He is a gorgeous boy, barred pattern like his Barred Rock side, with feathered legs like his Marans side.

And his stripes are golden not white.

Today the ladies gave me 14 eggs. I collected them quickly as it was quite cold and I didn’t want them to freeze.
He is stunning! He’s got the huge Marans comb and wattles for sure!

Oh my gosh my friends' hens LOVE to pick grain out of horse poop. Horse poop dries really fast here and when my friend cleans her corrals, she dumps much of the dried poop right into her chicken run. The hens love love love to pick through all of it, breaking it down, and what remains actually makes for some pretty good footing for the run. That might seem gross but it's just dry and sandy and really soft.

I know combs and wattles can get frostbite, can the bottoms of the chickens' feet also get frostbite from walking around in the snow?
