My Coop
Hatched on 29 May of this year, he’s already trying to crow. He’s a loner a lot, but is pushing his way up the pecking order. I can’t get close to him to actually pick him up, but he does come when I call and takes treats from my hand. I guess I have to spend a lot more time in the coop handling him after dark and in the run during the day. Sigh, I so wanted those dark brown butt nuggets!

He’s turned into a very handsome boy! And, so far, he’s calm, docile, very attentive, and eats right out of my hand! Fingers crossed he stays this way.

His only potential issue is that he’s a feather eater. He plucks feathers from my senior Easter Egger and my two Salmon Faverolles… Not sure why, he eats the chick starter grower, so is getting plenty of protein. Any thoughts?

I was shocked that he jumped right up there. And didn’t mind at all when I sat down. He’s jumped up when I’m already sitting in the chair too.

He really is handsome! I'm glad he's friendly at the moment!!
As for the feather pecking, i can only think that he might be bored, or in too close proximity with other chickens. But, by the looks of it, he's allowed outside, so i really don’t know! Hopefully someone else might know.

They all get outside twice a day for adult supervised play time. We have a LOT of predators, so they don’t free range. We are in the middle of a hundred plus acre hardwood tree farm and have eagles, owls, five kinds of hawks, bobcats, yotes, fox, neighbors’ dogs, dogs people drop off, etc.

The coop is 8’ x 12’ and the run is 9’ x 24’ with only fourteen total birds. Plenty of chow, two waterers, loads of roost space, and breeds that are all laid back and calm.

I don't have an answer about the feather plucking but I do have a question for you.. It sounds like we live in a similar predator heavy area. I have the same predators here in East Texas and am surrounded by woods. I've been keeping them in a secure run and let them into a tractor for "field trips" but would love to let them out to free range with supervision. How does that work for you? Is it hard to wrangle them back into the run?

Also, your cockerel is beautiful! Maybe the feather plucking is just a bad habit? Sounds like he's getting plenty of protein and isn't bored.

I taught my girls to come when I call! They know that’s the only time they get treats from me, so they hightail it inside! 😂

Hmmm ok I'll try it! I have a bucket of black soldier fly larva that I shake to get their attention so I'll see if it works.... wish me luck! I only worry about one. She's... special. Doesn't seem to have the same instincts as the others and constantly gets confused.
