“My journey to becoming a graphic designer wasn’t a straight path but one of growth and discovery,” says Lana Burlachuk, who goes by Lana B on Behance. “I was always creative as a child, spending time drawing, crafting, and sewing, but I initially studied economics, thinking a career in art was unrealistic.”

It wasn’t until she launched her own business — a granola company — that she was introduced to graphic design. Lana taught herself how to create the logos and packaging for her product, in the process, discovered her love for design. “That experience led me to study at California Institute of the Arts, followed by three years at a branding agency, where I honed my skills and learned to collaborate with clients.”

Today, Lana is a freelance graphic designer and Adobe Certified Professional who has been steadily building her business and client base through Behance. “Behance has played a significant role in expanding my reach and establishing credibility in the industry,” she says. Lana has completed 12 paid projects through the platform, many of them from repeat clients: “It has connected me with clients who value design quality, resulting in new projects and long-term professional relationships.”

Lana upgraded to Behance Pro last year after completing her free 7 day trial. “I find the analytics section incredibly valuable for understanding my audience better, allowing me to tailor my work to their preferences and needs,” she says. She’s also been taking advantage of advanced project settings to create password-protected or link-access projects. “This is perfect for developing exclusive projects for specific clients or companies without adding them to the public portfolio. It’s a great way to maintain privacy and professionalism” she explains.

Lana’s goal as a designer is to create “not just eye-catching but truly unforgettable for consumers.” For each client project, she creates a detailed consumer profile and dives into research into their needs and desires. “This approach helps evoke positive emotions and ensures the brand leaves a lasting impression.”

One of the most meaningful projects for Lana is the packaging design she created for a peanut butter brand: “It stood out with its bold and modern look, capturing attention not only from designers but also drawing in clients from around the globe. What makes these projects even more rewarding is their success—both brands have become well-loved and sought after in the market.”

Behind Lana’s success is a process driven by continuous learning, experimentation, and self-care. She incorporates a set of habits into her routine to push her creative boundaries, stay motivated, and avoid burnout.

1. Start the day with Inspiration

For Lana, inspiration is an essential part of her creative process. “I regularly browse top agencies' and designers' portfolios on Behance, which provides inspiration for my own projects and helps me understand the latest design styles and techniques.” She also follows industry leaders and design blogs to stay updated on emerging trends. Engaging with the creative community keeps her motivated and encourages her to push the boundaries of her own work.

2. Dedicate time to experimentation

Creativity isn’t just about following trends—it’s about exploring new ideas. Lana sets aside time each day to experiment, whether through sketching, brainstorming, or testing out different concepts. “I dedicate time daily to sketching or brainstorming ideas, even if they’re not project-related,” Lana explains. This habit allows her to break out of routine work and develop fresh, original designs.

3. Take short breaks

Resting and recharging is just as hard work when it comes to sustaining creativity and avoiding burnout. Lana emphasizes the importance of taking breaks: “I believe in the power of stepping back and allowing myself moments of stillness; sometimes, letting the mind wander is where the best ideas come from!” She takes short breaks and often goes for a walk to help her mind recharge. By allowing space for creativity to breathe, Lana returns to her projects with renewed focus and fresh inspiration.

4. Stay curious

For Lana, continuous learning is the key to growth: “Staying curious is my secret weapon.” She makes it a habit to learn something new regularly to expand both her skillset and business. Currently, she is diving into 3D design techniques with the goal of creating more dynamic and impactful presentations. “This new skill will also enable me to offer more versatile solutions to clients, incorporating cutting-edge design elements into my work,” she adds.
