Das weisse Band Eine deutsche Kindergeschichte
This film, full of unfilmed imagery, has haunted me more intensely than any other. Such depth, such artistic bravery. I am in awe of how Haneke grows poetry in intellectual soil.
SE, JIE
So incredibly beautiful, touching and frightening. The dramatic construction is exquisite and the film is the most atmospheric I have ever seen. A sublime, grand adaptation of a perfect, dense short story.
Ida
The most precise, minimalist cinematic language used to tell a hugely complex story.
The Deer Hunter
For its outstanding performances, the artistic confidence, for its sublime wedding sequence and for its underplayed, modest ending.
East of Eden
I saw this film the Sunday afternoon I first experienced an explosion of love. Maybe I was 14. When I walked out, my first real boyfriend to be was waiting on the street. I don’t know how he knew I had gone to the cinema.
So, just like the unforgettable scene in the ferris wheel, I got a long, secret kiss and my life took at different direction. James Dean paled in comparison.
À bout de souffle
One of the reasons I love cinema so much. One of the first art house films I ever saw. It’s so complete in its seemingly effortless style, form and content totally unified.
Doctor Zhivago
So visionary, so perfectionist, so grand.
Mulholland Dr.
My favourite film about film, cinema’s relation to time and dreams, and Hollywood.
Some Like It Hot
It was this or Billy Wilder’s The Apartment. They are both quoted in the new film I’ve directed:
La Contadora de Películas. Both scripts are incredibly witty and full of elegance and everybody’s timing is impeccable.
