I still remember the day my hairdresser told me that my sulfate-packed drugstore shampoo was actually destroying my highlighted hair, and I was like, "What do you mean?" (I was also scrubbing my face with 10 percent benzoyl peroxide wash every night at the time, so you could say my beauty regime wasn't exactly gentle.) As it turns out, many drugstore shampoo brands are loaded with sulfates (which leave your hair squeaky clean but also stripped of its natural oils) and silicones (which add slip but can also cause waxy buildup)...but that doesn't mean all drugstore shampoos are bad news.

Despite what you may think, a more expensive shampoo isn't always going to be better. As cosmetic chemist Nick Dindio previously told Cosmo, "You can actually get very good quality products at a drugstore." The best drugstore shampoo for you will vary based on your hair type and needs, but generally speaking, I like to look for budget-friendly shampoos that are free from 1) more aggressive sulfates, such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and 2) non-soluble silicones, like dimethicone. (And FTR: There is a time and place for both sulfates and silicones! It all depends on what your hair can handle.)

Our top picks for the best drugstore shampoos of 2024:

Ahead, all the best drugstore shampoos (as determined by Cosmo editors with a variety of hair types and my own personal testing), as well as expert tips for finding the best formula for your needs.

Salon vs. drugstore shampoo—which is better?

linebreak

Why do drugstore shampoos get a bad rap? Generally speaking, drugstore shampoos tend to rely on harsher detergents, while salon products tend to be gentler on strands and scalps. But that doesn't mean all drugstore shampoos suck!! Just like any beauty product, a product is only as effective as its ingredients, and there are *tons* of drugstore hair products (including shampoos) that really, really deliver. As hairstylist Giovanni Vaccaro previously told Cosmo, "You do want to make sure the shampoo you're using, regardless of the price, is tailored to your hair's specific needs, so you're not wasting your money or hurting your hair."

How to choose the best drugstore shampoo

linebreak

Consider skipping the sulfates and silicones

Let me say it again for the ppl in the back: Sulfates are not the enemy, and some people can actually benefit from using sulfated detergents. That said, sulfates are harsh surfactants that can strip away your hair and scalp's natural oils, so those with dry, damaged, or overly-processed hair should probs avoid them (or at least use them *very* sparingly).

Likewise, silicones are great for giving hair slip and shine, but they can also weigh down fine, thin, or straight hair types. Instead, look for lightweight silicone alternatives, like hemisqualane (also known as c13-15 alkane) or water-soluble proteins (such as hydrolyzed wheat protein).

Check out the fragrance

Not to state the obvious, but what smells good to your bestie may not smell great to you. If you can, do a sniff test before investing in a shampoo to make sure it speaks to you before lathering up—otherwise, you might be stuck smelling it for days. And, ofc, you'll want to determine whether you prefer a synthetic or natural fragrance.

Artificially fragranced products are not inherently bad, but if you do go with a synthetic fragrance, you'll want to make sure it's free from lilial, phthalates, or any other potentially harmful ingredients. Also! If you are allergic to fragrances, have a v sensitive scalp, or would rather steer clear of synthetic fragrances altogether, I suggest choosing a formula that's only scented with essential oils, such as Avalon Organics Volumizing Rosemary Shampoo.

Keep your hair type and texture in mind

When choosing a drugstore shampoo, it's always helpful to understand your hair porosity (aka your hair's ability to absorb and retain hydration). For instance, those with low-porosity hair will typically wanna stick with formulas that use lightweight serums to smooth and hydrate (like Maui Moisture Lightweight Hydration Shampoo), while those with high-porosity hair can usually handle heavier oils and butters (like the ones in the SheaMoisture Curl & Shine Shampoo). Not sure about your hair porosity? Take the Curls Bot porosity quiz.

Likewise, it's also good to know your hair type and determine what kind of formula will work best for your texture. (Did you know there are 12 distinct hair types??) Cosmo's got a helpful hair type guide to get ya started, 'cause knowledge is power.
