Believe it or not, it’s been five (!) years since we saw the Big Little Lies crew. And after stars Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman recently told Vanity Fair that season 3 “is moving fast and furious,” fans are patiently waiting for another update.
If it’s any consolation, Esquire’s latest cover star, Zoë Kravitz, is right there with them. While discussing her directorial debut Blink Twice (out August 23), we asked Kravitz about the future of the HBO series. So what’s going on? “I’m waiting for someone to tell me where to show up,” she says.
In case you need a refresher, Kravitz stars as Bonnie Carlson, a young woman who’s married to Madeline Mackenzie’s (Reese Witherspoon) ex-husband, Nathan (James Tupper). Kravitz is often compared to her character—who is similarly charming and mysterious—but she told Esquire that she and Bonnie wouldn’t get along in real life. Still, Bonnie marked Kravitz’s breakout as an actress, which didn’t surprise Kidman. “I always knew it would come,” Kidman told Esquire. “She’s got this quiet confidence. She draws you in.”
While we wait to learn what’s next for Bonnie, keep reading for everything we know about Big Little Lies season 3.
What Will Happen in Big Little Lies Season 3?
Season 1 of Big Little Lies was adapted from Liane Moriarty’s novel of the same name. The series focused on five mothers whose lives intertwine because of a local murder. Season 2 saw the cast face new problems when the mother of the deceased showed up for revenge. The plot of season 3 is under wraps, but it should pick up where season 2 left off, with the Monterey Five turning themselves into the authorities.
“We’re moving fast and furious,” Kidman told Vanity Fair in June. “And Liane [Moriarty] is delivering the book. Yeah, and we’re in good shape. The rest is—we need to shut up, because there’s this whole thing that you should never talk about something until you’ve done it. If you talk about doing it, it’s the dopamine hit of doing it.”
Who Is in Big Little Lies Season 3?
We should see the return of the main players in season 3: Kravitz, Kidman, Witherspoon Shailene Woodley, and Laura Dern are expected to reprise their roles. I’m holding out hope that Meryl Streep will return too, but after her grand exit in season 2, it doesn’t seem likely. (Fingers crossed for a flashback scene!) Aside from the core cast, we should see appearances from the women’s partners as well—which means, yes, Adam Scott’s Ed Mackenzie should be back on our screens before we know it.
When Will Big Little Lies Season 3 Premiere?
HBO has yet to officially announce that season 3 is even official, so we’re a long way away from a release date. In the meantime, let’s just hope someone makes that call to Kravitz sooner than later.
