region in southeastern Europe between the Balkans and the Aegean and Black seas, formerly a Roman province, from Latinized form of Greek Thrakē, said to have been named for the people who inhabited it, whose name (Thrax) is of unknown origin, perhaps Semitic. Related: Thracian.
