Origin and history of twink

twink(n.)

c. 1400, "a wink or blink of the eye," also the very brief time taken by one, in phrase in a twynk of oon eye "suddenly, almost instantaneously." This is from twink (v.) "to wink," also "to scintillate, sparkle," which probably is from Old English twincan (see twinkle (v.)) or a back-formation from Middle English verb twinklen.

The meaning "a twinkle" is attested from 1830. Also compare twinkling.

The meaning "young sexually attractive person" is recorded from 1963, probably from Twinkie; but compare 1920s-30s British homosexual slang twank in a similar sense.

Middle English twinklen, of persons, "wink (in a significant way)," from Old English twinclian "to shut and open the eyes quickly, wink, also "shine with rapid intermittent light," frequentative of twincan "to wink, blink," with -el (3).

Twinklers for "eyes" is attested from 1650s. The verb in relation to rapid fluttering or interchange of the feet in movement is attested by 1640s; twinkle-toed in dance jargon is attested by 1960.

c. 1300, "a wink, a glance," verbal noun from twinkle (v.). As "a shining, gleaming, flashing, sparkling," of fixed stars, etc., late 14c. Phrase in the twinkling of an eye "in a very brief time" is attested from c. 1300 (yn twynkelyng of an ye), also twink of an eye (c. 1400).
