LATA – A RARE DIAMOND

The article on Nightingale Lata Mangeshkar in the November issue took me down memory lane. I was born in 1936 and Mahal was a 1949 film. Kamal Amrohi’s directorial debut launched both playback singer Lata Mangeshkar and leading lady Madhubala. Aayega aanewala sung by Lata continues to fascinate. Khemchand Prakash gave the music while the lyrics were by Nakshab Jaaravchi. The article on Lataji’s music with several music directors was well-documented. Those were the times when music was the lifeline of a film. Today’s music is machine made and lacks soul.
