Mercado is a karate instructor who has studied Shotokan Karate and Tai Chi Chuan. He is a holder of a sixth degree black belt in Shotokan Karate and a member of the following associations: Japan Karate Association (JKA), International San Ten Karate Association (ISKA) and Hana-Dai Ichi Karate Association of the United States of America. He represented the 1975 World Karate-Do Championship – US Elimination at Los Angeles, California. He has instructed colleges in Kansas and Missouri (Park University, Parkville, Missouri and Kansas City Kansas Community College). He has also instructed U.S. Army troops of Special Operations Command, members of the Kansas City Police force and local YMCA’s in greater Kansas City. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Infantry Officers Advanced Course, at Fort Benning, Georgia. He has served as a staff officer of the United States Military Academy (USMA) in West Point, New York.view less
