Frat House Collection - Kenneth Guthrie
TOO MUCH TO DRINK
Pink skirt, black vest, the cow was dressed up to party – with Joey on its back!
FIRST VISIT
Joey stood outside of the big house. It was one of the largest houses on the block and there were dozens of people standing outside of it. Joey read the name above the door set in purple and orange neon lights: Alpha Mega Beta. That biggest fraternity on campus.
Joey was a little scared. He rubbed his sweaty hands on his blue jeans. When his father was in the military, he had been sent to this university. Before him was the fraternity he had joined. Now, Joey, the son, would follow in his father's footsteps, or at least he hoped.
He started to walk towards the front door. Inside of this house would be the ones that he would need to talk to. His father had told him stories of how the pledges worked and he was a little afraid of what the frat's leaders might do to him.
He took his first step through the doorway. It was an exciting moment and he felt a little dizzy. All around him young men and woman chatted around the outside of the house holding various different types of drinks in their hands.
Inside he found exactly what one would expect of a massive party. People were drinking and singing beer songs. A big breasted girl was letting people sign her breasts with a big felt pen. There were people dancing and chatting in groups. It all spoke of a fun and exciting experience, which was everything Joey wanted coming from a strict military camp home and school.
Someone grabbed him by the shoulders and turned him around. Joey came to face with a bucked tooth, dirty 20ish man with brown messy hair and wearing dark clothing.
Man, you gotta have some cash. Come one hook me up.
Joey tried to escape, but the man had him firmly by the shoulders. He tried to respond, but was cut off.
Hey, how about just $10. You can do that. You look like you got good money.
The man started to pat Joey down. He wanted to push the man away, but that might start a fight in this sort of environment and he didn't want to get in trouble on his first visit.
Joey pushed the man's insistent hands away from him. The man looked up at him with an angry look on his face.
You not gonna share your goods with me, bro?
The man started to reach for Joey's jeans pocket.
Joey was lost with what to do. The man kept on trying even though Joey tried to stop him. He ended up having only one choice.
Stop. Just leave me alone.
Two men in football t-shirts looked over.
What you mean...
A big hand pushed the man to the ground.
Looks like you just met Bludge.
The big guy with freckles and an eager looking grin put Bludge into a headlock and took him outside.
Joey didn't know what to think of the whole situation. He had been saved from that dirty man, but he had probably created a bad relationship with one of the frat's members.
The big guy came back in with a beer in hand.
Don't worry. Bob does that to everyone who comes into the house. He's really not that bad a guy when you get past the stealing, lying and lack of any form of morals.
The big guy downed his beer in one go.
You thirsty?
He started to drag Joey towards where there were several beer kegs located. Joey followed along. His father had told him that he would need to be nice to everyone he met when he entered the house. It was important to create good relationships when you first arrived.
So you must be a part of the frat? I reckon you must be new here because I would remember seeing you around.
The man downed another beer and poured a third. He must have the belly of a tank.
I'm actually here to ask if I can join the frat.
The man's hand stopped half way up.
Oh man, that's not good.
He looked around.
You should get out of here before anyone else finds that out.
Joey was shocked. Had he done something wrong?
A tall very well dressed man came up to them then. The big guy cringed.
Eric, who's this that you have with you?
Cody. Um... he's a friend of mine.
Oh? You know tonight is a frat only party.
Joey's heart sunk. He had walked into an invite only party and now he was in real trouble. Cody looked him over.
You don't belong here. You'll need to leave.
Joey looked towards the door on the far side of the room. He didn't want to leave things like this.
I'm here to join the frat if I can. My father told me that I need to talk to the Super Five.
Eric looked at him curiously.
What was your father's name?
Cody asked.
Major Thomas Jenkins.
Cody whistled.
Alright, what's your name?
I'm Joey Jenkins. Nice to meet you.
Cody nodded.
Come on then, Jenkins Junior. I have some people for you to meet.
Joey felt a thrill of excitement. Things were going well.
REJECTION LETTER
He could have cried. The Super Five had listened to him ask to pledge for a place in their frat and had laughed him out the door. They had obviously respected his father, but one of them had labeled Joey 'a country bumpkin'. It hadn't been long before he was thrown out the door after that.
He sat down on the side of the road with his head in his hands. His father would be so depressed when he told him the news. He
