    Traveling to Chichicastenango

Chichicastenango is about ninety miles, northwest of Guatemala City.  During most of your travel, you will be on the CA-1 Highway or also called the Pan-American Highway.  Most of the highway is fairly new, so you should not have any problems. Depending on what is in the road, the travel time is between three and four hours.  If this is your first time in Guatemala, you may not fully understand the previous sentence.  In time you will................

If you have a tendency to have motion sickness, it is advised to pre-medicate before your travels.  If you are on a bus or van, most drivers will not have a lot of sympathy.  It is better to be safe, than to be miserable.  There are several brands of medicines now available, that do not cause drowsiness.

If you are arriving from Guatemala City, Antigua, Panajachel or Quetzaltenango, you will pass though Los Encuentros.  It is a busy intersection where there are many buses, vans, restaurants and stores.  If you are getting low in gasoline or diesel, it would be good to make a purchase at the Texaco here.

When you leave Los Encuentros, you will be on winding mountain roads, with many hairpin curves.  You will pass through a fruit inspection. They are checking, more or less, for the exotic fruit fly.  There is fear of cross-contamination, so it is a good idea not to have any fruit with you.  Some fruits are permitted to cross but you are at risk of losing it.   Be aware, they may or may not open your door but usually check the glove box.

As you continue to travel, you will see a sign giving you advanced notice of Chichicastenango and Lake Atitlan.

A few more kilometers down the highway, you will have a great photo opportunity of the lake. When you pass kilometer marker 120, be looking to your left.
