Chapter 1
Paige stayed on the porch for an eternity, dazed, frightened beyond all reasoning. Not for herself. The horror was what waited ahead. The smear of blood on the door jam gave Paige the shivers, but what truly scared her, more than anything, was the silence of the day.
Open the door, Paige. Open the door.
Wiping the tears from her eyes, Paige swallowed hard and pushed the door open. The scream in her heart gave way, crumbling beneath the layers of disbelief Paige tried to build up when she saw her father's body. Blood still dripped from his neck, what was left of it. He'd been torn apart by some savage animal. Only one dead eye stared at what was left of a happy family home. The other had been ripped out.
Mom,
Paige was crying for help, but her voice barely rose above a whisper. She had meant to scream her mother's name. The words stuck in the top of her throat.
Please, Jake. Wake me up. Wake me up and tell me it's time to go home. The words looped through Paige's head like a mantra, over and over. This can't be real.
Mom?
Paige stepped past her dad. Why hadn't he defended himself? But she couldn't think straight seeing him like that. She had to find her mother. Dad would keep Mom safe. That's what he did, kept everyone safe.
Paige found her mother on the double bed in the master bedroom wearing a worn pink flannel nightgown with flowers sprinkled all over it. All of the blankets were on the floor, some torn into shreds as if the blankets themselves had fought battle for her mom.
Her Mom's stomach had been torn open and long looping guts flopped out. Paige could hardly see through the tears. Her mother's eyes sought hers and she reached a hand out to Paige, Honey, they're not real wolves. Todd, he came by last night.
Paige couldn't take her eyes away from the things coming out of her Mom's belly. The ambulance was all-volunteer and would take at least thirty minutes to get to the farmhouse. I don't care about Todd. We need to stop the bleeding. Mom, I'll call for help. Everything will be all right.
Paige yanked open the second drawer and pulled out a few of her dad's t-shirts, grabbing the phone on her way to the bedside. Feeling uncertain, she held the shirts to her mother's abdomen where the most blood was coming. She dialed for help. She barely remembered her own name, much less the address to the farm where she had grown up. She felt dazed and unsteady as she answered question after question.
Paige, you listen to me. Put that phone down.
It was the voice that ordered Paige to turn off the T.V. and help with the dishes, the voice that told Paige to get the bandages out of the cabinet. Your father cut his thumb.
Even while a professional woman with a calm demeanor told Paige that help was on the way, she put the phone down. I'm here, Mom.
Now you listen. And don't interrupt.
Her mom took a breath and as her chest rose, a fresh bloom of blood rose darkened the fabric, and Paige felt the organs under her hand move. Paige nearly lost it, there. She lifted her head and stared at her mother's eyes. Look at her eyes. Not at that other.
"Mom, we need to stop the bleeding." Paige was still holding the shirt on the wound, but her hands were already sticky with blood.
Honey, your dad is already here waiting for me. And when it's time, I'll go.
Her face was pale as she spoke the words, each one a struggle.
Don't talk like that, Mom. The ambulance is coming.
"Listen to me, Paige. Werewolves. Todd is a
