    James Rice

    James Rice (1843-1882) was an English novelist. Born in Northampton and educated at Cambridge University, he became a lawyer at Lincoln’s Inn in 1871. There, he befriended Walter Besant, with whom he would collaborate on over a dozen popular novels and short story collections, included The Golden Butterfly (1876). Their prolific working relationship ended in tragedy in 1882 with Rice’s untimely death I Redhill, Surrey.

      You are looking at the river which crested its banks and completely flooded the tracks stranding the 5:15 commuter train with over 150 passengers for almost 11 hours. A few lucky passengers were able to escape the deluge through the lower windows of the train. However, the majority of the passengers were trapped as the floodwaters rose at an alarming rate, trapping them inside without food or water and little hope of rescue until the floodwaters receded. I spoke with some of the rescued passengers.

      All of a sudden, the train came to a shuddering stop. I turned to look out the window and that’s when I saw the water rising from the creek. It was moving fast, you know, a little bit like a mini tsunami. I hurried across the aisle and looked out the other side to see people climbing out the windows on the lower deck, splashing water as they made their way to higher ground. By the time I got to the lower level, the floodwater was up above the level of the window and we could no longer open it. We were trapped. By that time, most of the passengers had retreated to the upper level and there we had to stay until the rescue workers could come and get us out. It’s a good thing I had those two boxes of granola bars in my bag!

      What to Do During a Flood in Brazil

      First of all, guarantee that you will have some supplies at home: 1 Emergency kit, 1 Walkie-talkie, 1 lantern, emergency batteries, essential medicine and coats! Don’t wait for the flood to start. Buy everything before it happens! Besides that, you have to keep a reserve of drinking water and canned food that can last for, at least, 3 days.

      At the first signal of strong rain, put your furniture and valuable objects in high places and turn off electronic devices, the water and the gas in the house. After this, remove the trash and put it in safe places where it cannot plug holes. Before leaving the house, put important documents and cash in a plastic bag and keep it with you. Wear footwear, slacks and a coat to protect your body and don’t wear shorts or be shirtless.

      When you are leaving the house, avoid direct contact with contaminated flood water and never drink it. If you cannot see the floor, don’t try to cross streets and pay attention to holes without covers or masked by water. In case of strong winds, beware of wires, falling trees, poles and traffic lights. Try to go to high places that you can stay away from water. Don’t forget: the most important thing is to save lives, but if you are in a safe place, stay there and try to call the police.

      After the rain stops and the flood water is at a low level, you must keep alert. Just drink filtered water, do not eat any food that was touched by the flood water and do not use electrical devices that have been wet. Go to Health Services and before using something that you find in the water, disinfect it. You can do this using one cup of bleach for every 20 litres of clean water.

      Use the passive voice to place the emphasis on a different part of the sentence or on a different piece of information within that sentence. Use it when it is not important to know who did the action of the sentence or when that information is unknown. In that case, we want to emphasize the result of the action or the action itself.

      When it isn’t necessary to know who is responsible for the action or we simply don’t know at all, we leave out the by phrase. Example: The hikers were snowed in (by snow) .

      Generally, the perfect progressive forms are not used as they make the sentence much too long and the verb construction is far too complicated, so they are generally not used.

      The Passive Voice

      If we have an active sentence with two objects, in order to make it passive, only one of the objects becomes the subject and the second object remains an object. The one we choose to make the subject of the sentence depends on what we want to emphasize. In the two passive examples, the by Emily phrase sounds very unnatural and for that reason it is usually omitted.

      Using the Passive Voice

      Re-write the sentence using the passive.
