Welcome!
Hello!
Thank you for purchasing this eBook and welcome to your new " Travel eGuide: South Africa . We hope it will help you discover this vast country with beautiful scenery, wild animals and friendly people. South Africa is a destination that is not so frequented by foreign tourists. As a matter of fact we haven't met a lot during our journey in this country, and we have to say that some local people was quite surprised to find out that we are going to cross the Wild Coast for example... They prevent us to be careful because this road could be
special".... and we found out some of its specialties. That's right, animals crossing the national road from nowhere, people walking on the road, and long distances without few human being living there. However, our journey in South Africa was a real discovery for us and we can just recommend you as well to try the experience :-)!
This e-guide offers a different approach between a travel log
and a classic tourist guide. You can imagine that we do not have a team like the Lonely Planet, so you will not find in this e-book full of addresses of accommodation or restaurants. We share with you our travels, our experiences. We hope that this will help you discover new destinations and will make you want to visit them.
You can read more (and even see videos) about this country on my blog-travel.voyage here.
And if you wish to be posted, than subscribe at my newsletter here.
This eGuide proposes you another approach, between a travel log
and a classic tourist guide, allowing you to discover many hidden treasures. It is the fruit of years of experience as a couple, as travelers and life adventurers
. The choice of the destinations are our sole responsibility.
We don't have a team like Lonely Planet or other big publish houses, so you are not going to find in this eGuide a large choice of accommodations, restaurants or shops. We share with you our travels, our experiences. We hope that this will help you to discover new destinations and make you wish to visit them.
This e-guide although it works almost like a website, doesn’t need to be used along with an Internet connection (unless you want to access the "OpenStreetMap" and other hyperlinks that we provide throughout the book).
Depending on the capabilities of your eBook reader, you can enjoy zoom features on photos. You can also click on the hypertext links (or hyperlinks) underlined throughout the e-guide. We tried our best to make your reading experience as enjoyable as possible, despite the wide technology gaps between various reading systems.
Be sure that we will propose to you more interactive versions, as the formats and eBook readers should be standardized in the future!
Well, enough chatting. Just turn the page to discover photos and adventures!
Sincerely,
Cristina & Olivier
Practical tips
- South Africa -
Formalities
Atourist visa is not required for a stay of less than three months. However, you need a passport valid for 6 months following your departure date from South Africa. Please inquire at the South African Embassy in your country for specific details. An international driving license is highly recommended if you do not want to encounter any problems.
Security
The country has a bad reputation, but when we got there, we felt quite safe.
Tips:
Avoid big cities, they can be dangerous, especially Johannesburg, Durban and East London. This doesn't mean that you cannot visit them, because we did. But take some precautions : visiting during the day, being careful and avoiding troubles. I recommend you also to not have an accommodation in these cities, but you should rather choose a quiet residential area. This would be much safer.
Lock your car doors when you leave and park in guarded parking lots.
Do not stop at red lights after 10 pm (this is a common and acceptable practice).
Do not visit the town center of major cities after office hours and on weekends.
Choose accommodations that have parking inside.
Avoid going out after nightfall.
Travel with photocopies of identity documents and keep the originals at your hotel.
Do not go to townships unaccompanied; hire a guide or someone who knows the area well.
In the city, drive around with the windows up and doors locked and never leave bags, luggage or valuables visible inside the vehicle.
Avoid driving at night.
The purchase, sale, possession or consumption of drugs and narcotics are illegal in South Africa and are severely punishable by law.
Budget tips:
Plane tickets
Follow the facts and not your intuition! By tracking ticket fares and promotions, you can actually get cheaper prices, just like we did when we booked a flight on an Air France Airbus A380 coming from Paris!
Tips:
Buy your tickets in advance (minimum of 3 or even 6 months) to get the best rates so you can choose the dates of your holidays. Look for promotions from different airlines (tickets starting from 700 € from any European country).
If possible, avoid traveling at holiday times (Christmas, New Year, etc.) to get the cheapest price for your airline tickets.
With Air France or KLM a round-trip from Paris to Johannesburg costs 700 € (all tax included).
When flying with Lufthansa (departing from Germany), prices start from 630 € (all tax included).
Emirates Airlines offers flights departing from Paris, starting from 630 € (all tax included) or from London, starting from £525. Check the possibilities, based on your departure date and location.
You can also fly with Turkish Airlines for rates starting from 550 € (including VAT) from Paris or US$ 690 departing from the United States.
For all airlines arriving in Johannesburg and other details on Tambo International Airport services look here!
Traveling in South Africa
In South Africa, you should not to rely on public transport or trains because you may encounter some difficulties.
Tips:
Acar rental is the most suitable way of getting around in South Africa. It also gives you a lot of freedom. It costs about 168 ZAR per day (approx. 15 € per day), if you book online in advance. You also have to make a small deposit.
Note: You must make your reservation using a credit card. You must also have sufficient funds on your bank account (rental amount + 300 € and more). If not, you will not be able to rent the car after arriving at the airport.
