Rowan Ash was up to her elbows in shit when she realized she was being watched.
Sitting back on her feet, she shook the organic fertilizer from her hands and peeled off her gardening gloves so she could shield her eyes as she peered at the forest growing right up against the westernmost border of her property.
At this time of year, on the cusp of summer, the flora grew in a thick, lush emerald tangle. Even though the sun shone high in the sky, shadows filled the woods. Sometimes she saw deer out there, grazing and watching her tend the garden she shared with them, but today there was nothing to account for the prickling sensation at the back of her neck.
Biting her lip, she gathered her tools. As the daughter of a clan of mountain witches renowned throughout the central Appalachian region for the strength of their Sight, Rowan knew better than anyone that the eyes in her head weren’t as reliable as the eyes in her heart.
After storing her tools in the shed, she quickly made her way into the house via the mud room. A row of wooden pegs protruded from the wall, holding hats and jackets for every sort of weather. Most of the gear was menswear and far too big for her, despite the abundance she carried in her chest and booty.
She was in the process of getting rid of the previous owners’ belongings, but she’d been in that process for months now, and in a way, it heartened her to see that lives could leave physical impressions even after they’d ended.
Some things came in handy, anyway, like the blaze-orange vest that shared a peg with her sun hat. She wore that vest whenever she had to work close to the woods. Hunting season was still months off but in her part of rural West Virginia, the calendar didn’t mean much.
With a little shiver, she did something she didn’t usually do and locked the back door...and silently admitted to herself that hunters weren’t the source of her wariness.
Freaking werewolves,
she muttered on her way to the shower.
Her paranoia meter had been clocking double-time since the end of April, when her little world had expanded to include shapeshifters. She’d left the wolves behind in Michigan and they’d left her alone despite her knowledge of their secretive existence, but she couldn’t shake the certainty that she hadn’t seen the last of them.
Or her hope that she hadn’t seen the last of one in particular.
As she stripped out of her soil-smeared cut-offs and tee, she caught sight of herself in the mirror on the back of the bathroom door. A chunk of tiger’s eye quartz nestled between her breasts. She touched the smooth stone and shivered.
The amulet should have felt warm from the heat of her body and the summer day. Instead, it was icy cold, as cold as she’d felt when the werewolf came for her. Closing her fist around it, she squeezed her eyes shut and opened herself to the memory.
After an overnight stay at a tiny hospital in Michigan, she’d taken the county’s only taxi back to a motel in Calla Beach. Forrest, the man—werewolf—who’d rescued her had arranged for her car to be towed and a room booked in her name.
The snow from the late-spring storm that had pulled her off the road was starting to melt in patches touched by the weak morning sun, but a cold wind blew off Lake Michigan. It cut through the thin, damp material of her pants and bit at her cheeks. After paying the taxi driver she picked up her key card from the motel’s check-in desk.
The motel’s rooms were the outside-entry sort, each accessible from the parking lot. Shivering, she stopped to grab her small suitcase from the trunk of her car before setting off to find her room.
She was inserting the key card into the reader slot when a shadow fell across the door and a prickle of awareness slid down her spine. As the light on the lock flashed green, a muscular, bare male arm reached around her and opened the door before the light turned back to red.
Inside.
His voice was deep, commanding, and her feet obeyed him even as her brain was still trying to catch up.
He followed her into the room. The door latched noisily, so loud, she could hear it over the roar of blood in her ears.
Fear pumped adrenaline through her veins, but excitement blocked her fight-or-flight response system. It was the same mixed-up reaction she’d had while watching the good werewolves exact justice upon the bad werewolf who was part of the pack that had attacked and taken her.
As she stood in the center of the motel room, quaking and staring at the pair of double beds with their worn gold bedspreads, the fear slowly edged back. She instinctively knew which of the werewolves had come for her.
Heart in her throat, she slowly turned to face him. His eyes immediately ensnared her—ice-blue, piercing, stripping her bare.
They stood staring at each other for long minutes. Even though he was the one who’d come to her and forced his way into her room, his expression mirrored the wary, confused hunger she felt.
Breathe,
he ordered, emerging from the frozen moment before she did..
As if his voice had pulled a lever, her chest heaved and her lungs released the burning breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. His gaze fell to her breasts, where her nipples suddenly drew up into tight, hard peaks. There was no way he could see her body’s response through her coat.
Still, his eyes darkened as if he could see exactly that.
A heavy thump startled her from her paralyzed fascination. With effort, she looked away from his eyes and down to the floor, where he’d dropped her suitcase. Her purse, a boxy ivory leather tote with a filmy blue scarf knotted around one handle, looked delicate where it dangled beside his thickly muscled thigh.
His naked thigh, dusky skin darkened by whorls of black hair that thinned just before his leg connected with his groin, and yes, she looked. His cock was thick and long, even while soft, and a couple shades darker than the rest of his skin. Heavy testicles framed the length of his penis, which didn’t remain flaccid under her examination.
As he hardened, growing even thicker and longer, her pussy answered with heat and wetness and sudden, pulsing hunger. The motel room felt small and hot.
She had her coat half open before she realized what she was doing. With a hitching breath, she folded her arms across her
