Chapter One Failure
The website had a spate of hits on Tuesday, but nothing for the rest of the week. No hits meant no inquiries. Inquiries generated bookings, which turned into money, and a lack of cash flow was an unbearable possibility. The phone only rang with disappointing news of more shows being postponed or cancelled. The year had been tough, and bookings were thin. Magic Mo was becoming Slow Mo. It was painful to see the business he had fought so hard to build enter a steady decline. Mo had hoped his glory days would last forever .
He wasted time, secretly waiting for change, but by the end of the month, he considered a future as an entertainer at children’s parties. That thought brought involuntary shudders of disgust. He didn't like kids, and working with them was not a future he could bear. His only conclusion after a slow April was that something had to change.
Against the advice of his Mom, he gave up a promising career as an accountant in favor of being a magician. It was a rash move in the eyes of his traditional family, who had an illustrious line of doctors, dentists, and engineers. He defied his parent's expectations in order to be true to himself. He knew what made him happy, but in rough patches like this, he often thought about accountancy. It would have been a relief to know that a salary would arrive at the end of the month.
Mo told himself to be brave, but his fears grew with each month as a mountain of bills came to his door. As if by magic, Mo saw his bills deferred and his savings depleted before his
very
eyes

Desperate, Mo called his old agent, Jack, to scout for work. Jack was Mo’s only friend. Magicians led solitary lives—if they got close to people, they might feel inclined to share their tricks.
Hey, Mo, long time no speak. How are you, buddy?
Jack answered in what Mo recognized as his telephone voice. From Jack's tone, Mo knew something was wrong.
I’m good, thanks for asking. Hey, work is a little slow. Any chance you can ask around for me?
asked Mo, trying his best to sound relaxed. He had gotten straight to the point, but he was met with a few seconds of silence.

said Jack, releasing a large sigh. You know, things are slow all around.
