Author

Gertrude Stein

Gertrude Stein (1874–1946) was an American novelist and poet. Born in Pennsylvania, in 1903 she immigrated to France, where she would live for the rest of her life. The home on the Left Bank of Paris that she shared with her partner, Alice B. Toklas, became a cultural hub as young artists and writers began to gather there. As her salon rose to prominence, Stein befriended several expatriate authors living in Paris, including Djuna Barnes, James Joyce, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Ernest Hemingway. Stein has been credited with coining the term the lost generation to describe this group of writers. She died in France in 1946.

    Fernhurst

Fernhurst was first published in 1971 by Liveright, New York and is one of Stein’s earliest writings. The author began composing the book in the latter part of 1904 about a year after she had completed Q.E.D. At this point Stein and her brother were staying in the Paris apartment that they would share until 1914, when Leo moved to Italy after their relationship became acrimonious. It was during the decade they lived together that they accumulated an extensive and impressive art collection, including works by Cézanne, Renoir, Gauguin, Matisse, Bonnard and Picasso. They often hosted artists and painters at their residence and they quickly gained a reputation as discerning appraisers of art. Stein developed close friendships with Matisse and Picasso, with the latter having an important influence over her writing style.

In Q.E.D, Stein fictionalised her own love triangle while at college and explored the idea of attempting to write about something for which there seemed to be no language available at the time. Fernhurst revolves around another real life love triangle, this time involving three academics at Bryn Mawr College. The three people involved were a philosophy professor, Alfred Hodder; the Dean of the College, Carey Thomas; and a faculty member, Mamie Gwinn. Hodder, who was married, began an affair with Gwinn, who had been in a long-term relationship with Thomas. It was a complicated
