Godsend 12 - K Elliott
CHAPTER 1
Mike-Mike was methodically positioned behind the empty dog house in his father’s backyard. He’d been waiting with very little movement for the past 50 minutes, rifle aimed at a certain perch in an oak tree. He knew Flap Jack would show up; he just didn’t know when.
The Wal-Mart rifle was heavy, but it was a powerful BB gun, nothing like those made 20 years ago. Mike-Mike was hoping against everything that his dad didn’t call him right about now, because he could finally see Flap Jack approaching, wings flapping loud and hard as usual on the big black bird. An overgrown crow.
At 5:44 p.m., Flap Jack landed on his favorite tree limb and surveyed the area. He noticed the bread crumbs on the ground and to his right, but he was a smart bird. Why were there no other birds around? Looked like a damn setup. His head darted furtively, and his large wings flashed once as he regained his balance.
Mike-Mike had his black ass now. He lined the scope up with the bird’s chest while keeping one eye squeezed shut. He was just about to pull the trigger.
Ain’t your little ass too young to be playing with guns?
Echo said. He stepped around the corner of the house with Kiandra.
Flap Jack took off, wings furiously slapping together.
Mike-Mike pulled the trigger by accident, and didn’t even hit the tree. He swung around, startled. You made me miss my damn shot! Don’t be sneaking in people’s backyard. What do you want?
Echo said, Looking for Michael Hudson. You his son?
Why do you wanna know?
Echo and Kiandra walked up to the 14-year-old black boy. Echo looked at the weather-beaten dog house. So we can tell him your ass was cursing and trying to murder birds.
"That ain’t no regular bird. That’s Flap Jack, a bully that always run off the other small birds when I feed them. And damn ain’t a curse word."
Kiandra said, "When was the last time you told your dad you wanted some damn new shoes or some damn money?"
Mike-Mike laughed. What’s your name?
Kiandra said, Why do you need to know?
Because I wanna call you and talk about some damn dates you can take me out on.
Echo said, In my face? You trying to pull my woman while I just watch it all go down? I ought to bend that gun across your big-ass head.
He was a handsome kid, but he’d heard references to his head being big one too many times. He said to Echo, Your shit looks like a fish aquarium. With sharks in it,
and he laughed until he almost fell off the doghouse.
Echo stepped closer and snatched the rifle from him, examining it.
Hey! Give my fuckin gun back!
Echo smiled. I knew it. Your little ass fake-breaking with a BB gun. My woman don’t fuck with BB gun toters.
I bet I’ll get my dad’s gun and push your scalp back like a wave cap.
Kiandra said, Calm down, young man. We’re here to see your dad. We’re gonna find out who killed your mom.
Mike-Mike simply said, Oh.
Echo said, Where is he?
I guess he’s still at work. I heard when y’all pulled up, but I thought it was his truck. He’ll be here by 5:30.
Echo said, It’s almost six.
He gave the rifle back to the boy.
Kiandra said, Can we ask you some questions about your mom until your dad gets here?
I don’t care. Can I get your phone number when I answer all your questions?
Hell no,
she said.
CHAPTER 2
The Hudson family home was a modest place with four bedrooms and a nice carport. The quiet community was an old subdivision of 130 homes with plenty shade trees that were as old as 28 years. Denver, Colorado. First week of April.
Echo and Kiandra were sitting on a sofa in a nicely furnished front room. The boy was facing them in an armchair, reclined to show Kiandra that he was cool.
