      Author’s note: The series was originally intended to be a semi-serious mystery but it got away from me and morphed into a romantic comedy instead. Pary’s crazy side blossoms in future books.

      CHAPTER 1

      Parody Barry firmly believed two things in life were facts. The happy smile of good fortune seemed to shine on some people their whole lives and follow them, no matter what they did. Those people always had money- lots of it. Maybe money couldn't buy love or happiness, but it could buy pretty much everything else.

      Then there was the mysterious giant chute in the sky, dropping loads of crap, rotten cabbage, and other nasty items right on the heads of others. It too followed some people their whole lives, and there was no way to buy one's self out of that situation. The best a person could do was move fast and always carry a towel...or toilet paper...or an umbrella.

      Pary didn't have to ask which side of the fence she was on. Abandoned as a baby, she was adopted by a loving family. They just never really understood her. Naming her Parody Hope Barry didn't improve that situation. Parody was never sure if her genetics or her adoptive family was the reason she ended up where she did in life. It was probably a combination of both, which meant she was sentenced to never being a normal person.

      These days she often went by PB. Sure, it was an awful moniker, but no matter which name she chose, she couldn't outrun the bad jokes. She started school with her given name, Parody. That was okay until the kindergarten prodigy, who read the dictionary for fun, looked up her name. And Pary Barry? The stupid jokes were endless. As an adult, she kept her mouth shut and asked people to use PB or Pary.

      Parody Barry, Private Investigator was written on the business cards she handed out. She was qualified as a private investigator, with a state license and plenty of solved cases to prove it. She also had plenty of competition in the field. So she worked hard, but it didn't always pay the bills. Maybe her background wasn't without one perk. It explained her rather unique...some might say morbid...side business. The one that helped pay the bills.

      PB's other business card advertised Final Destination Pet Services. It was a fancy way of saying she was the taxi driver who drove Rover to the vet to meet his maker. Some people wanted to take their pets and be there right until the end. And for those who didn't? They called PB. It's not that she hated animals. She just never developed an attachment to them, which made her job easier.

      When Pary had to give a school report on what she wanted to be when she grew up, she chose: private investigator. The reason? She looked the part. End of report (because she hated writing reports in school). It's too bad she hadn't done her homework and learned writing reports were a necessity when one was a PI. Had she known, she'd have chosen to be a mime.

      However, she wasn't joking about looking like a PI. Not because she had a sexy 1940s glam look or even a modern sassy style. When Pary looked in the mirror she saw average in every way. Height (5’ 4"), weight (nobody's business because even average girls deserve their secrets), hair (light brown, straight, shoulder length), and eye color (dark gray). People didn't look at Pary, they looked through her. She could blend into most surroundings easily. Good for business, bad for personal life.

      Today, she was on business, serving a court summons. The sneaky bank loan officer suddenly switched branches every day, always leaving her a step behind. Pary gave up the chase, not wanting him to recognize her. Instead she counted the branches, waiting for him to run out of different places. As of today, he completed the circuit and was working at the branch
