      God loved the Memphis Belle. That was the only explanation. How else could the Belle (a clever nickname for the B-17 Flying Fortress) have survived nearly twenty long-range bombing missions? That has to be it. Lincoln thought. God loves the Memphis Belle.

      Lincoln, stay on that .50! a familiar voice screamed out. Krauts just nailed the Viking Princess...her ass is going down!

      Yes sir, LT! Lincoln shouted back. He didn't know if his lieutenant heard him or not – probably not – but didn't think it mattered. Lincoln hadn't let up on the .50 machine gun since the German Luftwaffe first hit them.

      He was the plane's tail gunner and had been tracking the small German planes against the sky for nearly ten minutes now. Most of the American air squadron had been lost – most of the German Luftwaffe had been lost, too.

      I got one breaking upward! Lincoln shouted. He's making for the clouds and I can't get a solid bead on him!"

      He'd hoped that another one of the Belle's gunners could. Instead, he felt the rig of steel tilt upward and begin giving chase. What the? Lincoln thought. We're not going to catch it in this! He glanced over his shoulder into the interior of the plane.

      Hold on, he's been clipped, his lieutenant yelled out. I might be able to run him down in the Belle!

      There were ten of them total, and that fact alone meant that the Memphis Belle weighed too much. Factor in all of the steel plating, nuts and bolts, and bombs; it would take a miracle for them to run down a German plane, any German plane, clipped or not.

      Suddenly, the clouds around the Belle grew darker. Gray at first, and then they became even darker than that, like the black trunk of a tornado. Yet there wasn't any wind to speak of, at least no more than usual. Slowly the black clouds transitioned to the most beautiful red that any of them had ever seen. Lincoln forgot about the dogfight momentarily and found himself wondering if there was a name for this peach-kissed red. Like a tip of a wildflower, the red became blue – eerie blue – the kind that you'd expect to find deep within the
