    Chapter 1

MY NAME IS ALEX, AND I have a story to tell you....

It all started back in January, on my thirteenth birthday, but let me back up a little bit.

My name is Alex Baldacci.  I grew up with just my dad in a small farming town in Georgia.  When I wasn't in school, I spent the days working the farm.  We had two horses and five cows.  It was my responsibility to feed and care for them.  In a way, having them around made it feel like I was part of a much larger family.  There were many nights where I even fell asleep in the barn after telling Ben and Jerry, our horses, all about my day in school.

The only human friend I really had was Emily.  She was my next door neighbor, if you can even say that considering that our farms put our houses relatively far apart.  We met in kindergarten, sharing a seat on the bus for our first day of school and had been practically inseparable ever since.

If it wasn't for school, I probably wouldn't have ever even met Emily.  My dad was always very quiet and guarded.  I wasn't sure if he was just being over-protective of me, or if he wanted to make sure I was spending my time on the farm and not with friends.  Either way, he didn't go out of his way to talk to people and didn't like me to ever have anyone over.  Maybe it was because English wasn't his first language and he felt awkward talking to people with his thick Russian accent.

Eventually, though, he warmed up to Emily and even got to know her parents a little.  I imagine they saw him as a gruff, stern man since he very rarely smiled and most things he ever said to them were more of a grunt than actual words.  At home, though, I knew my dad to be something completely different.  He was playful, imaginative, kind and funny...so many things he never let the rest of the world see.

When people saw me and him in town together, I could tell from their looks that they were wondering what woman would ever have had a child with my dad.  Only I saw the other side of him...a side I could easily picture my mother falling in love with.

I never knew my mother and, in fact, I have only seen two pictures of her.  One was of her and my dad when they were getting married and the other of her holding me when I was three months old.  She looked so happy in both pictures.  Even though I can't remember her
