About this ebook
The word love, try to replace it . . .
eventually you will discover love remains the same . . .
It cannot be replaced with any word in our worlds dictionaries.
It is a word with a wonderful mixture of all beautiful meanings.
It plays the sweetest melodies, rhythms, and the underbelly of their range.
Somewhere between stormy passion and haunting despair lies a powerful feeling like no other. Love is a complicated emotion, one that all of us struggle to understand at one time or another.
In her first compilation of poetry in English, Palestinian poet Amany Al-Hallaq shares moving, lyrical verse that reveals all the passionate emotions that accompany falling in love. With an honest, relatable style, Al-Hallaq relies on vivid imagery as she takes an unforgettable journey through love, comparing the powerful emotion to a sweet mango, with its seductive taste, smooth skin, and magnificent fragrance.
Al-Hallaqs poetry eloquently speaks of love through deviant lust, a luminous smile, and a gentle whisper while positing that through every challenge, true love stands strong and able to withstand any stormproving that no matter what, it really is sweeter than a mango.

Between Your Ribs - Amany Al-Hallaq
Glimmer of Your Eyes
Since I was a child, I have not known adventures.
Allow me to launch my adventures from your eyes.
Let me hover around every place and time.
Let me touch the colors of the rainbow painted on
the surface of the sky. I hope to taste the raindrops
in the heart of the clouds. I would like to discover
the beauty of the atmosphere that embraces the tears
of your eyes.
Let me find out every corner of the sky and the land
of your eyes. I am the lover who is cauterized with the fire
of the love that lives in your eyes. I am deprived of all
the beauty of the universe, which is held in your eyes.
I am a mad lover every time your eyes glimmer.
103852-ALHA-layout-low.pdfChesapeake
My lover calls to me. He trembles from the city of Chesapeake.
The phone resonates with his arresting voice:
Without seeing you, my life is barren of joy.
My lips and heart lose their way to happiness.
Reconcile me to felicity here in Chesapeake.
After being apart for many years, the loving words
leaked through my fingers and became sweet memories.
Words cannot bear his brightness. His beauty’s crucible
melts verses and poems transform to candles, illuminating
my way to him. Longing refuses to stay on the pages;
bursting forth, it carries me like a magic carpet to his arms.
Returning, on the verge of drowning in my longing’s ocean,
after I deluged him with my torrent of poetic adoration.
Returning, after my heart’s well dried up, it yearned for a sip
of his affection.
Arriving to the lover who redeemed my pains while giving birth
to my poems.
Approaching the lover who painted with his beauty my sweetest,
maddest moments.
I come back to his deep, alluring eyes that melt mortals’ hearts
and crumble all cities and the touch of his royalty within the folds
of his eyes.
Our burning lips witness the birth of feelings.
Intoxicated within his embrace.
Our dances, the tango and flamenco, inspirit our nights, and in
Island Café, we drank our evenings, our black coffee.
I am an exhausted lover, who drifted among all countries,
who lost her identity away from Chesapeake’s arms.
My love, I am a world of fatigue; let me repose
within your chest’s warmth
and forget me there.
Involuntary Love
I despise him yet yearn to see him.
I glimpse his subtle deception, which
he covers with his charming glances.
