      D addy, where’s my mommy ?

      If I had a choice between answering my four-year-old son’s question and getting captured and tortured again, I would’ve chosen the fucking torture. Nothing had ever ripped through my heart as brutally as looking into Titan’s eyes and telling him that I didn’t know where his mother was.

      My screen provided a much-needed buffer against my son’s tears and my agony. Titan was in England and I was an hour away from Madrid, and hopefully, Cider, his mother, and the woman that I loved more than anything in the world was still somewhere in the city. I had to find her because there was no way in hell that I could look at my son and tell him that his mother was dead. History could not repeat itself.

      I placed the phone on the counter and took a second to wipe my eyes and compose my thoughts. I couldn’t let Titan know how scared I was, and I couldn’t let him know how serious the situation was. The poor kid had been through enough and he already knew more about kidnapping than any child should know. But I had to tell him something because, after three days, I’d run out of excuses as to why he couldn’t talk to his mother.

      I picked up the phone and tried to keep my voice as neutral as possible. Do you remember when you and Mommy were kidnapped in Mexico?

      Titan nodded. A man took us in a van. Mommy said they wouldn’t hurt us. She said they needed to kidnap us to take us away from my first daddy.

      Yes, they did, and the same thing has happened again.

      But why? My other daddy is dead.

      It’s not the same people who kidnapped your mommy this time, Buddy. They kidnapped her because they want money from Daddy.

      Titan’s big brown eyes filled with tears. So give them money. His lips trembled. I want my mommy, he whimpered softly.

      I rested the phone on the counter instead of smashing it against the wall like I wanted to. The phone was the only lifeline I had with my child and the bastards who’d kidnapped my girlfriend. If I destroyed it, she was dead. I walked over to the back door and punched three big holes into the wood before I felt calm enough to return to the phone.

      I’m going to bring your mommy home, okay, son. I promise you. Now, let me talk to Mrs. Bumble. Titan’s face disappeared from the screen but his off-screen sobbing ripped through my heart.

      Mrs. Bumble’s kind, worried face filled my phone. Let me comfort him and then I’ll call you back, she said to me.

      Okay, Tell Ti I love him. I hung up and then banged my fist down on the counter. Fuck it! I reached into the box sitting on the counter with four large bottles of good Spanish brandy I’d bought to help dull my pain. I grabbed one by the neck and twisted the cap. I threw the cap on the floor and raised the bottle to my mouth.
