About this ebook

Bible stories are often told with a straight retelling of the scriptural text with very little emotion or motive emphasising what the story is trying to convey – the very real personal story contained with.
This book is a collection of 13 biblical accounts told from the perspective of some of the lesser known characters in the Bible.
Ever wondered what Rahab thought about the Israelites when they came to Jericho, or what the soldiers thought of Paul when he was shipwrecked, or how about what was running through Sapphira's mind when she held back the money from the disciples?
Get to read their Point Of View, along with some other great Bible characters.

'C. P. Clarke has a good eye for detail and a great turn of phrase. I recommend these retelling of Bible stories, both the more familiar and the less.'
Andrew Watson, Bishop of Guildford

    ACCOUNT FROM THE GRAVE

    (ACTS 5:1-11)

    ––––––––

You know the old saying about your life flashing before your eyes just before you die?  Well I'm not quite sure how people know that's true as who lives to tell it?  Maybe it's those lucky ones who have a near death experience and make it back, scraping their nails against the darkness as they're hauled away from the light at the end of the tunnel.  Who knows?  Or they read an account like mine - yes, the one you're reading now!  Don't ask how it got written down, you don't need to know; I guess it's a kinda mystery.  But rest assured - I am well and truly dead!

So I guess you want to know who I am, eh?  Well my name is Saf, and I don't really think there was anything remarkable about my life that made me stand out from the crowd.  Certainly when I died nothing glorious crossed my mind.  In fact just before I took my final breath the thoughts running through my mind had been of how I'd stuffed things up so lethally.  Even as I faced the leaders moments before I dropped to the ground I was lying through my teeth, not just to them but to the one who knows all and from whom I could hide nothing.

You're now wanting to know what I did that got me killed, right?  Ok I'll tell you, but only so that you don't make the same mistake.  I’d hate for you to be as selfish and deceitful as I was.

Now me and my husband Ani had recently begun to follow this group who called themselves disciples of Jesus.  We'd been to lots of their meetings and heard all their talks about how Jesus had come to save us and how we could be in relationship with God.  It was a great message and eventually we took the plunge and signed up, committing to follow him and do what his disciples directed us to do.

Their group had a really holistic outlook on life.  Not only did they feed our spirits with words from God and teach and encourage us to live a better life, with an eternal goal of being with Jesus, but they also took care of everyone in the community.  It was such a simple idea and everyone seemed to buy into it.

The way it worked was that everyone sold all their possessions and gave it to the disciples so that it could be distributed among the people - in this way no one went without and everyone's needs were taken care of.  It was brilliant!  No more struggling for food and shelter or clothes, no jealousy over whatever our neighbour had, no worrying about being ill because there was always someone there to take care of you, whether you were physically sick or just needed someone to talk to or wanted the comfort of a friend.  We worked hard and we all looked out for each other.

Dear Ani and me, we had a plot of land, not a big plot you understand but large enough to draw us a hefty profit.  We'd been hanging onto it for our retirement - you know it's always good to have something stashed away for the future or for emergencies.  Well the land was our retirement fund.

When the disciples asked us to sell all we had to give to the church of God's people we happily agreed.  That was until it came to actually doing it.  We really didn't want to let go of what we had, it was our life's savings after all - our security.

I can't remember who said it first, whether my dear Ani or me, but we both agreed on a plan of action that seemed to suit everyone.  We sold the land, got a good price too - how much isn't important, what's important is what we did next 'cause you need to know that it was wrong, and stupid.  If only we'd trusted God, but although we said it with our lips, in our hearts we weren't so convinced.  We thought we could deceive the disciples, and that much would have been true, but you can't deceive God - he knows all the dark places you try to cover up.

You've probably guessed what we did by now, right?  Good and faithful Ani, the last time I saw him he was walking off to the disciples with the money
