HUMAN
Thirty-eight trips around the sun
Millions of inhalations
And exhalations
One by one
From mountains to cities
Countless steps taken
Exploring this world
Bit by bit
A puzzle of memories
Building my story
One day it will fade
Piece by piece
I’ve never created life
But I know it’s precious
I’ve seen it seep away
Day by day
I’ve fallen into depths
Anguish, tragedy and fear
But love lifted me up
Little by little
So I’ll use that force
And what I’ve learned
To keep moving ahead
Moment by moment
There is strength
In accepting love
And giving it freely
To yourself and others
I will stumble and fall
Probably question it all
But I’ll rise and continue
Step after step
I hope to grow old
To witness Earth’s future
To know this beautiful place
With grit and grace
THIS BODY OF MINE
A soul
& its body
Marvel in awe
Spirits are energy
The physique is flesh
There is no recycling
the mind or corpse
It is ours only
one time
briefly
So I try to accept the mystery
Reflecting on what it means to be
Stretch it, exercise it, bathe it, thank it
Learn to love each extraordinary blemish
Take a deep breath to slow my racing heart
This is my shell, my security, my insecurity
If it lets me down, I might question it
But what it provides me, I cherish
This body of mine
What is its purpose?
I have no other choice but her
She’s feminine, but it’s not significant
Ovaries, cramps, soft skin, long hair, cellulite
These are components which don’t define my form
Parts can belong to anyone but I know what is truly mine
I wear it, see it, bear it & need it—but in the end I won’t be it
So while I’m here I will use this body the best I know how
To touch, taste, smell, hear & see the world around me
Harness the mind to experience life’s embodiment
As a glorious, fleshy vessel for my infinite soul
Conjuring the magic of exquisite existence
All the fantastic flaws of form
