"Why do you always embarrass this family Carla," Mama says, placing the back of her palm on her forehead, and shakes her head in disgust.

I look at my older sister, Sofia through the mirror, confused, and she silently shrugs, her eyes wide.

I stare at myself, I had tried on some skinny jeans, and a beautiful brown blouse.

Perhaps we should try on a dress, Mama says, gently grabbing my shoulder and leading me back to the racks.

Mama moves to stand near the entrance of the store, and I roll my eyes.

Can you at least try, Carla? You know how she gets, Sofie remarks, shuffling through clothes.

I don’t care how she gets, I watch as she clicks through the hangers, I don’t like dresses.

"We’re attending a ball," she deadpans, "You show up in jeans, and you’re going to have every family in La Famiglia talking about us."

Can you remind me why we have to go to this ball?

Lorenzo’s back, she says, and I awkwardly look around.

Am I supposed to know who that is? I knew…I just didn’t want my sister to know I knew.

She places her weight on one leg and a hand on her hip.

He’s the son of the mob family we protect.

Vincenzio has a son, I blanch, that can’t be good.

Vincenzio Beneditti was the Capo of the Beneditti Mafia, the Montagna, and Papa, Gabriele was his right hand and the leader of his soldiers.

Truthfully, I couldn’t care much about the Capo, he was a terrible, terrible man, and the things I’ve heard that he’s done . . . I just try to stay as far away from the Beneditti’s as possible.

    Here, how about this?

    It’s too short.

So you want something ball gown length?

    I want something that’s a t-shirt and some jeans.

Carla, Sofia sighs, "Whether you like it or not, you are the daughter of a soldato, and you have to uphold our status. You’ll only have to wear this dress for a few hours. Suck. It. Up."

She holds out the dress for me to take, and I bite the inside of my cheek before ripping it from her hands. Get me something longer, I tell her as I disappear into the dressing room. The first dress I tried on went as predicted, it was too short.

I was on the taller side, standing at 5’7, and I despised my thunder thighs being on full display.

Sofia returned not too long after, This one is perfect.

Mama refused to speak to me on the ride back home, and I had no objections to that. I placed my AirPods into my ears while leaning into the back seat, and let out a heavy sigh, quietly watching as she conversed with Sofia.

Mama’s second pregnancy was supposed to be a boy—it’s what she longed for—and instead, she got me. From what I understand when she had her hourly meltdowns, I should’ve been aborted.

Nevertheless, I was here, and even when I tried to make things better, they were never good enough for her.

Sofia looked into the back, her facial gestures hastily pointing towards Mama. I pull out one of my AirPods.

Stupid child, she snaps, her frown deep and disturbed, You are so disrespectful!

Utterly confused, I remain quiet, waiting on her to at least fill me in on what exactly
