From Farm to Pill - Marilyn R. Paul

    Overview

When considering vitamins that can improve your health, you may quickly think of well-known letters such as A, B, C, and D. Have you encountered the concept of organ complexes before? These supplements are comprised of animal organs, typically obtained from bovines. Organ complexes offer a way for you to benefit from nutrient-rich organ meats without the requirement to chew your diet.

While these organs may provide significant nutritional significance, they may lack aesthetic appeal. Do organ complex medications genuinely merit the disproportionate attention they receive, or should they be dismissed like neglected cows in a pasture?

Rachel Harrison, a trained nutritionist at Banner Health, furnished us with comprehensive data regarding organ complex supplements and their possible influence on your well-being.

What is the precise definition of organ complexes?

Organ meats, also referred to as offal, are usually the discarded parts of an animal. Although organ meats are highly regarded as a delicacy in other countries, they are often perceived as unappetizing by many individuals in the United States. Does anyone desire some foie gras?

Certain countries prefer organ meats because they offer benefits such as a wide variety of proteins, as well as important vitamins and minerals like iron, B12, and selenium, Harrison explained.

Organ complex supplements are animal organs that have been dehydrated or freeze-dried, pulverized, and then encapsulated to create tablets. According to Harrison, these can comprise various bovine organs, including the liver, heart, kidney, lungs, brain, spleen, gallbladder, and adrenal glands.

What are the possible risks linked to organ complex supplements?

Multiple firms claim that their products, when ingested regularly, offer roughly one serving of organ meats each week. However, there is a lack of knowledge regarding the nutritional benefits.

Organ complexes are a constituent of the dietary supplement market, which is essentially lacking in regulation, Harrison declared. This consistently raises concerns as consumers may excessively consume supplements or ingest something with minimal or no value, which could potentially be harmful.

Moreover, the ingestion of supplements containing cow brains, spleen, and kidneys can represent a substantial risk of contracting bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), a degenerative neurological disorder generally known as mad cow disease.

While the current risk of mad cow disease is minimal, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not have the power to oversee and ensure the safety and effectiveness of supplements, Harrison said. The absence of regulation increases the potential danger associated with consuming these supplements.

What distinguishes organ complexes from whole foods?

Organ complexes can be seen as a comprehensive reservoir of essential vitamins and minerals, akin to a multivitamin. Nevertheless, they are considerably more expensive in comparison to both multivitamins and complete meals that can be found at grocery stores.

Supplementation should be limited to a minimum, Harrison declared. Adopting a balanced and varied diet consisting of proteins, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and dairy or alternative milk options can increase your chances of meeting 100% of your daily requirement for vitamins and minerals. Undoubtedly, this is the most cost-effective and least processed approach to obtain them.

Would it be prudent for me to engage in experimentation with organ complexes?

Before incorporating any supplements into your routine, particularly organ complex supplements, it is crucial to seek guidance from your healthcare provider.

If your healthcare provider deems it necessary or advisable, I recommend taking a multivitamin or specifically supplementing the vitamin or mineral in which you are deficient, recommended Harrison. A multivitamin is a more economical option compared to organ complexes as it provides the same quantity of vitamins and minerals.

There is less research on the use of organ complexes as supplements, but there is abundant evidence on the use of whole meals to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Hence, it is recommended to abstain from expending your finances and subjecting your digestive system to avoidable discomfort, and instead, opt for authentic and unaltered food products - whole foods.
