    Just find it, would you?" Gloria snapped impatiently. For the umpteenth time, she’d lost the little hand-held tape-recorder she liked to use for practising her lines.

    Although it was Gloria who repeatedly tossed it carelessly away, it was invariably Kay’s job to locate it.

    Kay didn’t mind too much. Six months in and she was still pinching herself over the fact that she had somehow managed to get a job working on the set of Randlesford, the soap opera with the biggest viewing figures across the year of any show on British television in 1975.

    Gloria Hobbs played half of TV’s golden couple, Larry and Ruby Cook. The nation hung on every twist and turn in their troubled relationship.

    Kay preferred Frankie Tyrrell, who played Larry. In his late thirties, he was still handsome, in a roguish kind of way.

    He was easy-going, yet he had his passions – cricket being one of them.

    He had bid at auction for the bat that his boyhood hero, Len Hutton, used to help England win the Ashes in 1953, after a 19-year-drought, and now he kept it in his dressing-room, where he also, somewhat unexpectedly, liked to listen to Elgar.

    Morning, Kay. He always remembered her name. Be a good girl and fetch us a cup of coffee. I’m just popping in to see Her Majesty.

    Frankie always behaved as though Gloria was a diva who needed careful handling, which to some extent she was.

    Yes, Mr Tyrrell.

    Kay scurried off to the catering wagon. She’d find Gloria’s tape recorder later.
