    Prologue

She had long-since suspected that Enchantro might turn… treacherous.

Chanterelle crossed her arms as the wind grazed her skin. There was a dissatisfaction in her, one that she couldn’t deny. They were at the very top of a skyscraper that grazed the clouds, but a light in the distance reminded her that she was not on top of the world just yet.

She heard him emerge from behind her, opening a set of iron doors with a lever. Truly, no circuits more complicated than that worked anymore in this once-great city. The residents had placed all their faith in a giant engine to power their homes, their doors, their lights…

And they had paid dearly for it.

She listened, for she heard him approach. His steps were far too slow. One… two… three… four… five… she counted in her mind, between one step and the next. He had not announced himself, and she had not turned around to look at him.

    He was sneaking towards her.

She closed her eyes. There was no real barrier keeping her safe. If she were to look down, she would see hundreds of blocks between where she was, and where she would land. But Chanterelle’s mind wasn’t one to be overtaken by fear so easily. Instead, she wondered about other things. That insufferable fool calling himself Railguy had decided to make a run for it. He had proven mostly useless, but he would have been at least one more shield between her and Steve.

    Thunder exploded in the distance.

    Another step behind her.

Phase 3 is still underway, she finally said, still not turning around. Despite some delays.

He stopped, for he had been caught.

Yes, he had wanted to push her over the edge, she concluded.

She turned around, because she knew she had the power here.

Our ace is still not played, Enchantro, Chanterelle said. But I believe this delay might serve our interests.

He had grown pale, as many now did. The sun had been out for so long, even Chanterelle’s yellow hair had started losing its brilliant hue. But she knew that was the only thing still keeping him loyal to her – the only thing that would stop him from pushing her over the edge.

The last Command Block, Chanterelle explained. We still have it. Steve and his allies must have figured it out by now, don’t you think?

Enchantro hesitated. His robes resembled those of a Wandering Trader, and his eyes were the same emerald color that was once this city’s lifeblood.

They can’t destroy me, Chanterelle said. Because I am the only hope they have.

    Yes… Enchantro said. Exactly…

Enchantro can’t destroy me either, Chanterelle thought. He wants the sun back, too.

Enchantro swallowed the spit that had collected in his mouth, trying to compose himself. He looked out at the distance, at the new light that rose in the horizon, and acted like he had come up here to discuss something with her.

Tag and Obsidian are working downstairs, Enchantro said. More Far Landers are joining our cause… but they are restless, Chanterelle. They wish for war.

And war they will get, Chanterelle said. But first, a war of attrition.

Chanterelle reached into her leather chestpiece, pulling out a letter she had written.

A war of attrition, yes, Chanterelle said. "The art of wearing down your enemy. They are slain not by big, dramatic battles. No, they are slain by their hunger, their exhaustion, their… instincts."

    She grinned.

She saw the fear in his eyes.

This is an offer to them, Chanterelle said, holding out the note for Enchantro to take. I believe that with every twenty-four hours that the sun does not rise, they will continue to spiral. They can pretend to be heroic, but only to a point. Eventually, we all become treacherous.

Enchantro hesitated for a few seconds, then reached forward to take the letter from Chanterelle. As he did, she suddenly grabbed his arm, and she almost burst out laughing when he looked like he was about to scream.

Take this to them, she said. Use a potion to make yourself invisible, and leave it for the Director. Tell them I am considering to destroy our second and only remaining Command Block if they don’t relent soon. Either way, we know they can’t hold out forever.

    Enchantro gulped.

Do… do you think they’ll believe you? Enchantro said. You… you’re not planning to actually destroy that thing, are you?

Chanterelle let go of his arm, grinning, looking back at the tower in the distance.

I am, Chanterelle said. I guess you could say I’m a night owl.

    Part 1: Smith

    Chapter 1

Whether the sun disappeared or the rivers began to flood, whether a Creeper exploded inside a firework store, whether a Griefer dropped a bucket of lava right into his bedroom, whether an army of the undead invaded his home… Smith always wanted to look professional.

No, maybe because of all those terrible possibilities, not in spite of them.

Steve and Alex always mentioned that the only constant in their lives had been change. But Smith would have argued that the real constant was chaos. Years ago, when he had first been recruited by the secretive E.N.D Foundation, they had introduced him to something called Murphy’s Law:

Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.

Smith remembered thinking that was a downright depressing way of looking at the world. His instructor, a senior Agent who had also gone by the name Murphy, had said Smith was missing the point.

You have to be ready for anything, Agent Murphy had explained. When you are prepared for the worst, you’re prepared for anything. In the rare occasions where the absolute worst doesn’t happen, well, you can at least be pleasantly surprised.

Smith sighed as his eyes opened, wondering where Agent Murphy was now. Like many, his teacher had retired from working for E.N.D many years ago.

Like everyone, they now probably struggled in the endless night.

Smith pulled himself out of bed with a yawn. It was exactly thirty-two days into the apocalypse. He knew because he had a paper right next to the emerald block he used as an end table next to his bed, where he tried to keep track of the passage of time. He had thought it would be difficult being more than a month deep into the end of the world, but he knew his responsibilities couldn’t wait.

Above him, a Redstone lamp, shining down from the roof.

Behind him, a layer of black wool against the window. The curtain wasn’t there to block the morning sun, because there would be none. It was there for privacy against the outside world.

He walked over to the desk he had converted into a dresser. Life had gotten a little easier since Foxfree
