Arhant

The Arhant cannot read the narrator's karma: "'Mi dispiace,' disse lui, 'mio fratello dice che non e possible, tu sei un altro'" (78).

(8) The arhat ("worthy one," also rendered as arhant) is someone (usually a monk) who has achieved nirvana yet is inferior to a Buddha.

The editors' translation of this sentence does not seem felicitous: "They are called arhant...

Indeed, morality comprises three factors of the Noble Eightfold Path (right speech, right action, and right livelihood) and undergirds the precepts of the monk or arhant in Theravada Buddhism as well as the vows of the bodhisattva in Mahayana forms of Buddhism.

The phronimos of this general practice is, of course, the Buddha himself, but also the Arhants who brought the path to its completion as well.

(4) The setting for the discourse is not a conclave of thousands of perfected arhants, celestial bodhisattvas and other assorted quasi-deities on the semi-mythical Vulture Peak, but a simple assembly of 1250 monks in the Jeta Forest near Sharvasti.
