Whether or not there was one supernova or a series of them, the supernova energy that spread layers of iron-60 all over the world also caused penetrating particles called
muons to shower Earth, causing cancers and mutations -- especially to larger animals.

Similar to X-rays, which can penetrate the body and allow bone imaging, the elementary
muon particles can keep a quasi-linear trajectory while going through hundreds of meters of stone before decaying or being absorbed, according to the study.
Muon detectors have previously been used to map out the inside of the Fukushima's nuclear reactor in Japan and it is hoped they can be used to explore other archaeological sites.
Muon particles originate from interactions between cosmic rays from space and atoms of Earth's upper atmosphere.
Now scientists have utilized a promising new technique that looks at subatomic particles known as
muons to investigate bedrock geometry.
The postulate is claimed to have been shown to be true for accelerations of ~[10.sup.16]g in a Mossbauer spectroscopy experiment by Kundig [5] and of ~[10.sup.18]g in Bailey et al's
muon experiment [2], which uses rotational motion of particles to generate the acceleration--one obtains the quoted acceleration for a particle velocity close to the speed of light.
These projects are the International Linear Collider (ILC) [52] with a center-of-mass energy of 0.5 TeV and low-energy
muon collider (a [[mu].sup.+] [[mu].sup.-] collider, shortly [micro]C) [53].
