Hello there,
I was going through school one day, and while trying to find out how to properly utilize useEffects/useStates in the wonderful library that is React - a movie on my YouTube home page recommended to me caught my eye. Initially looking at the thumbnail elicited a chuckle given how goofy it looked, and I just kind of brushed it off thinking it was another one of those cheap/rushed kid's movies that are so common especially on Netflix.
But as the day wore on and I found myself finishing my unit test at 2:00 AM with my brain in a sleepy stupor - the Court of Officials within my subconscious made it clear to me that because the movie contained canines I was legally obligated to watch it. And that I did. I found the movie titled "A Dog's Courage", put on some headphones, got comfy with some ice-water on my bed, and proceeded to enjoy the movie through to the end. And given how I was driven to draw a whole piece of fan-art for it, I actually enjoyed this movie a ton more than I thought I would. Spoiler alert too down below if you haven't watched it yet ha-ha.
For starters, I wish I had known the movie was originally a very highly advertised/produced South Korean film. I would have went out of my way to find the original and watch a sub-titled version opposed to the dubbed one. I like watching media how the creators originally intended, but an animated film in this case the English version wasn't too bad. If it was live action, the difference between what you hear/see would've been too jarring but thankfully here it's easy to sync the English to an animated dog's muzzle ha-ha.
Now onto the content...
The beginning saddened me lots, I hated how the owners of the dogs just abandoned them no problem. And as a result failing to understand the true nature of pet ownership - it sucks. Moong-chi and his gang losing the ones they thought who loved them, and eventually some of each other. And despite all this, they keep pushing through to an end they dont even really know exists. But of course it ended up being worth it.
The whole overall tone of the movie was very somber but with cute and happy scenes. I'm grateful for it because when a movie is able to capture your emotions both good and sad and reciprocate them - it makes for an enjoyable and grounded experience rather than just a silly film that makes you laugh throughout. I don't know who first said it, but this quote has always stuck with me: "Ridiculousness makes the reader surrender their emotions, because we're hit the hardest when we expect to laugh."
It sucks like with Moong-chi at the beginning having an electric collar - bro wasn't even that loud/rambunctious during the film so what even was the point of his "owners" placing it on him. Bami having scars across her frame, and the other dogs feeling abandoned and un-loved. It's sad to see the very blue Border Collie at the beginning hold onto his ball for a period of hope he had for his owners still loving him and apparent desire to come back. The dog kennels lined with sick pups, and that one hunter dude who - in my eyes - kind of resembles a down-bad Lord Farquaad if he survived Shrek 1 and made a living off killing animals.
The family bond they developed as the film progressed is what made me very happy and full of glee - especially when Moong-chi and Bami had a family of their own together. I'm a sucker for stuff like that. It sounds dumb - but it gives me a look into what I would one day experience as a Father myself and I await the day I'm able to have a loving wife and kids of my own.
Especially regarding the ending hand-drawn cinematic with them enjoying the fruits of their labors, and settling into a home of their own. The scene of them with the Fire-flies is my favorite, I love the music that accompanies the scene and the wonder/adoration is amazingly whole some. One funny thing though is the cutest scene is right after the "scariest" scene during this cinematic. At 1:36:41 on the YouTube version, the Chihuahua's grinning face is pretty startling, but good thing it's followed by the super adorable bundles of joy that are the three newborn puppies they just look so cute <3
I liked all the character designs and the mix of 2D-3D was pretty nice. I feel though Gaeko's design could've been much more cuter, his eyes are really crazy in design XD
After my super tired brain processed this whole film, I stumbled my way to my own dog's bed and took a pillow and a blanket with me so I could sleep next to her. She of course ended up stealing my own pillow, and she accidentally kicked me in the face a few times, but I was far too lost in thought about the movie until I myself drifted off to sleep too.
All in all - I really loved this movie and I'm happy I had enough energy to do a drawing about it. While I don't want my gallery to become a repository of just fan-art but rather of my own characters, I'd still like to draw some things about stuff that inspires me every so often. What's cool is drawing this type of content took me way back to my early days of drawing. My last fan-art of this stature was of Pound-Puppies on my old DeviantArt page. Thank goodness it's no longer up, young me loved it as much as modern me now fears it XD
I hope you all have a wonderful rest of your day -
have a good one.

This just may be my favourite thing you've posted to date...it's really beautiful.
Aww, I'm super happy you really enjoyed this drawing - it was enjoyable to work on and knowing you took some piece of good from it is always a treat :D
It's been a long while since I've drawn feral/quadrapedal animals - and the wholesome nature of the artwork helped me imagine how they all would interact with eachother.
I hope to draw more things similar in nature, and for them to be just as good if not better :)

It's perfectly fine to use your gallery as your personal portfolio--that includes fanart too!
This looks really fucking good, mate. I hope to see more atmospheric stuff like this. (c;

There are so many different things I want to draw, but I need to get through my other projects first so I focus my energy on them instead. I rarely do fan-art, even on the side in my sketchbook. When I do I try to go all out ha-ha.
I'm extremely appreciative you found the art good enough for a compliment such as this, it means a lot coming from much more able-bodied artists and it sure does make me feel moreso like one too :D
I would love to draw more detailed one-panel pieces, especially for my own characters. I just find comics more easier to convey the ideas I have, so I do those instead. However that's going to change :)

Looking forward to it, mate. Keep up the good work. :cD b
This is the most amazing Underdog/A Dog's Courage fan art I've seen so far. I wonder what Bami and Moong-chi would have named their puppies.
Aww thank you so much!
I tried to find some fanart before I even drew this so as to get a good idea on what to draw - but there wasn't a whole lot to find.
But to hear that my own piece is that good makes me super happy - it was a pleasure drawing this and your comment makes me feel appreciated :D
I honestly have no idea - I don't know any Korean so I couldn't come up with cool puppy names of that culture. Even in English though, that's a difficult undertaking. The names might be based off their individual personalities or even based off the parents of Bami but who knows!
Cool to speculate though :)
