Toby R. Beeny is the creator of Archaios, an expansive mythopoeic world where the mystical and the real converge. His current work, The Bjornlinga Saga, is part of this ongoing project that invites readers into a rich tapestry of mythic history and epic storytelling. With a PhD in medieval literature and linguistics, Dr. Beeny’s academic background shapes his approach to world-building, drawing from ancient myths and medieval sources to create something entirely new.

In addition to Archaios, Beeny’s Philosophical Narratives series—including The Iron Way, The Babel Project, and Lilacs from the Dead Land—explore deep existential questions, blending philosophical reflection, mythic dreamscapes, and innovative storytelling. His scholarly work fo

I mean alot. And read all sorts of literature to start. Read medieval works, Shakespeare, the Bible, modern works. Read every piece of literature that everyone else tells you is amazing. It doesn't matter if you like it. Some of it you will hate. You want to get good language in your brain.

Step 2: Write. A lot. It doesn't matter what . Write in a journal. Write short stories, long stories, snippets of dialogue. Weird little things that you don't know what to do with. Don't worry about it being something publishable at first. Just write your heart out. This is practice. You will develop your voice.

If you do these two things, eventually you will feel in your heart what you want to say. Write this. This is your work.(less)

Tending the Flame

This week, I’ve found myself buried under academic responsibilities, preparing for the spring semester. It is the eternal struggle of every creator—to be torn from dreams and visions and drawn into the mundane necessities of the world. When I was younger, I resented such stolen time, yearning for a life spent wholly in creation. But I’ve since learned that this tension is the nature of life itself

The Bjornlinga Saga #1 by Toby R. Beeny
“A cold terror gripped the men then, a fear that burrowed deep into their guts. The land itself felt malevolent, alive with a dark force that sought to consume them.”

The Bjornlinga Saga #1 by Toby R. Beeny
“We men of the north are not an overly philosophical race; living in harsh, unforgiving lands does not typically afford the opportunity to recline on couches and debate the nature of the universe, as those in Kanayama are wont to do.”

This series continues to be quite enjoyable. This isn't deep, thought-provoking literature, but I find that I can always read it late in the evening, and it is always competently written and interesting. ...more

“Once, long ago, I heard the mermaids singing, but I do not think they will sing to me now.”
Toby R. Beeny, Lilacs from the Dead Land: A Narrative of Nostalgia, Identity, and Dreams

“I was overcome by such a deep feeling of Sehnsucht while watching Puff the Magic Dragon that I felt like crying, but of course, I was a boy and boys don't cry.”
Toby R. Beeny, Lilacs from the Dead Land: A Narrative of Nostalgia, Identity, and Dreams

“It is a homesickness for a place I have never been, a sneaking feeling of being merely a traveler in this world, a dream I cannot quite remember, fading, fading...”
Toby R. Beeny, Lilacs from the Dead Land: A Narrative of Nostalgia, Identity, and Dreams

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”
William Durant

“He that breaks a thing to find out what it is has left the path of wisdom.”
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

“We have come from God, and inevitably the myths woven by us, though they contain error, will also reflect a splintered fragment of the true light, the eternal truth that is with God. Indeed only by myth-making, only by becoming 'sub-creator' and inventing stories, can Man aspire to the state of perfection that he knew before the Fall. Our myths may be misguided, but they steer however shakily towards the true harbour, while materialistic 'progress' leads only to a yawning abyss and the Iron Crown of the power of evil.”
J.R.R. Tolkien

“For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Return of the King
