Books on Books: Bookmaking, Biblioclasm, Bibliophilia

Of the Making of Books, there is no end, and on this list we celebrate by bringing together books on printing, gathering, binding, everything bibliographical (bookmaking, however, not lists of books) and bibliomaniacal. NO TECHNICAL MANUALS, please. These should be readable, enjoyable books with style and substance.

Mark Great list, I look forward to checking some of these out! However, you should really add "If on a Winter's Night a Traveler" by Italo Calvino! It's great fun to read, and a wonderful homage to books, language, readers, writers, publishers, booksellers, and book culture in general.

Absolutely.

Lynn How can I "bookmark" or "save" this list for future reference?

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Unfortunately, I don't think that's currently possible (unless you want to favorite it in your browser). Should be, though.

msleighm I can't believe the Thursday Next "Lost in a Good Book" series was omitted. How do I vote...?

message 9: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl I thought this was supposed to be a nonfiction list? There's a ton of fiction on here.

Click on the tab, "Add books to this list", found to the right of the first item now on the list. If you have any difficulty, mail me inside GoodReads or on Facebook (Thom Dunn, Cincinnati)

Hi there, L. G. ! Good to hear from you. I had in mind a nonfiction list but want a wide tent for people who have learned about bookmaking book---whatever from fiction. So for example I think "The Name of the Rose" informs readers about scribal habits. "82 Charring Cross" is borderline , I suppose, but look how many feel it belongs. .... "Let readers decide" has always been my credo.....but that includes you as well. I'd advise we start at the periphery and kick out irrelevant books from the bottom up.

Lobstergirl Hmm ok. I was thinking in particular about a spamming author who spams her book onto hundreds of lists, and found a place for it here (it seems to be a novel about journalists, which is not really what you are talking about).

Also - Madame Bovary - where's the bookmaking in there? What am I missing? She gets lost in novels, but so do a lot of novel heroines. I don't think we would put "Northanger Abbey" on here, for instance.

They should all go. Can you make it happen ? I am busy caring for a sick wife.

message 14: by Lobstergirl (new)

Much obliged. My wife has multiple myeloma and I am learning what it means to be a caregiver.

Lobstergirl Oh no! I'm sorry to hear it.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Very sad to hear it, Thom.

message 18: by Thom (new)

Thom Dunn L. G. and Suze: She has responded remarkably well to chemo and is working to regain her strength. A rewarding read on MM is Tom Brokaw's A Lucky Life Interrupted. Her case/response/treatment is comparable. And our, "Purpose holds, to sail beyond the sunset and the baths of all the western stars until [we] die."

Vicki #159 and #172 both Ten Years in the Tub.

Should be solved now, as I had the system perform a duplicate check.
