Man Booker International Prize: Eligible Books 2017
In the Goodreads tradition of the annual Booker eligible lists, this is a list of prospects for the new-style Man Booker International Prize.
(N.B. this list has no official connection with, or bearing on, the prize.)
The award is for a single work of fiction, translated into English and published in the UK.
Both novels and short story collections are eligible for the International Prize.
2017 Judges: Nick Barley (Chair), Daniel Hahn, Helen Mort, Elif Shafak, Chika Unigwe.
Other years:
Man Booker International Prize Eligible Books 2018
Man Booker International Prize Eligible Books 2016
A PDF of the prize rules is here.
If adding a title to this list, please bear in mind:
- Author and translator must be living at the time of the prize.
- The book must have its first UK publication between 1 May 2016 and 30 April 2017.
- No retranslations, or reprints of translations previously published in Britain.
- Publisher must have its "principal place of business in the UK" and have a UK ISBN. (The translation may have been released earlier in other English-speaking countries, but never previously issued by any British publisher. UK ISBN-10s - but also those issued in several other English-speaking countries - start with a 0 or 1.)
Thanks.

Also, the last eligibility criterion in the new rules might be difficult to determine for people who haven't worked in publishing:
b) In determining whether the work is published in the UK by an imprint formally established in the
UK it must comply with the following:
i. The imprint sells its list in pounds sterling and where sold in print its books are distributed through national (UK) retail outlets, and
ii. The work is one which must be deposited with the British Library pursuant to the Legal Deposit Library Acts (2OO3 & 2O13) and any regulations relating to these Acts, and
iii. The imprint has its principal place of business in the UK and is subject to UK registration and regulation including the primary liability to pay tax in the UK on all of its trading activities
as a publisher, or
iv. That the work in question is one for which the publisher has been allocated a UK International Standard Book Number.

(That all important 'or'. Do publishers based abroad but selling translations to the UK, e.g. World Editions, Hispabooks, use UK ISBNs? Can one tell a UK ISBN by sight with knowledge - and can many people do this - or does it require a database?)

Notes July 2016.
not eligible: Small Stations Press (based in Sofia, Bulgaria):
One Million Cows - has Bulgarian ISBN10: http://www.isbntools.com/details.html
Crystal Wedding has been deleted from the list because it was published in March 2016 (and would have been eligible for the 2016 MBI; it won an English PEN award & was longlisted for FT Emerging Voices award). A book likely to be of interest to the readers browsing this list, but just not eligible for 2017 MBI.

N.B. (1) I keep these lists of publishers checked in case someone else needed to take over adminning these lists. It would be great if there were one or two people who were equally geeky about these things, similar to those who do the English language Booker lists. But most of them so far seem to be in the blogosphere not GR.
(2) I'm not adding series crime. But if it's eligible under all the rules and others have added it, it won't be removed.
Darf Publishers: 2016 releases not yet displayed, (checked end of Feb).
