did not like it

For some reason I had hope the book would adress the transphobia and actually correct it. The total opposite happened.

The first thing I noticed was the constant transphobic ambiance with all that gender = genitalia through the whole book. It was disheartening to read esoecially this whole speech with Cassandra if he liked having a penis, this was out of time and I truly think still making that confusion of gender is your genitalia is harmful especially in a book I know will be read by young lgbt+ people.

Then there's the sexism/misogyny of Ari with his friend, because he's gay he was immune to be sexist and allowed to make weird jokes even when she explicitly sais it was making her uncomfortable. It should be obvious being gay isn't an excuse to do sexist jokes and thinking you can get away with it. Again, this is harmful.

Now they discovered bisexuality was a thing, I thought this at least would be done correctly but oh well! It only came up to be a threat to Dante bc Ari was being friendly with his girl classmate, Ari doesn't even get to explore if he might be bisexual, Dante is simply keeping him away to think about it, it is so clearly demonized, I don't know how a book published in 2021 can be allowed to write all that when it is supposed to be a cute/feel good book.

for the last thing the writing regressed, I felt like I was writing a mid fanfic in conclusion this book was unnecessary and with a lot of serious issues

Mick you have to realize, even though this book was written in modern day 21st century. the book is based in the 1980s, so everything you’re speaking about doesn’t ….”matter” like the whole talk of AIDS and only being for “gay men” isn’t such a big thing today, because, well, people know that’s not true. like i said, just because it was written in modern day, doesn’t mean the (writing) in the book will equal with your points. (gender=genitalia)??

Gordon Ambos Well, Ari repeatedly states that he "doesn't feel attracted" to and "doesn't feel that way" about girls, so he clearly isn't bisexual? Not to mention that he refers to himself als gay all the time. I can't comment on the other stuff, because I'm neither trans nor female, so it's not my place to. But thanks for pointing that out, I didn't notice this when I was reading the book. :)

Manuela They are 17 year olds in the 1980s, seriously what were you expecting? I understand some people are mad because he has done some questionable stuff, but this review is just ridiculous.

Leila it takes place in the '80s, people were a lot different back then, I'm not sure why you would think people of that time should or would have the same mindset of the 21st century?

kaz auditore even if its in the 80’ he wrote it in 2020-2021 he can still avoid sharing harmful view when the audience is young the conversation about genitalia could have been very easily avoided or just saying girls/boys instead of penis/vagina. he is gay and idc but when he was talking about her they are still young they could explore more of their sexuality it would have been possible its what im criticizing but no the other had to be jealous saying “im not attracted” to the other when hes in a jealousy crisis doesnt mean Anything to me. and last i cant let gays be gay when its by a transphobe, theres better books with gay men with no transphobia included :)

Koi Gays are not attracted opposite sex, this should not be that difficult. If it really doesn't matter to you, you are bisexual and that is ok too.

Michael Thomas you clearly have no clue about what being gay and in the 80's was like. please don't pontificate about things you obviously don't understand and haven't lived through. the fact that he wrote it later is irrelevant. you are asking for revisionist history. shame on you.
