it was amazing

im feeling generous, so im going to bump up my rating to a 5. even though i have some critiques and its highly unlikely i will continue this series, im left with a feeling of obsession.

yes, this story is too long, with slow pacing, and there really isnt an overall linear plot (if anything, if feels like the book is filled with repetitive little “side quests”). there is also some questionable content and many questions gone unanswered. but my lingering positive feelings allow me to overlook all of this.

i love the dialogue, the descriptions, the people, the atmosphere. i felt like i was transported to the scottish highlands right alongside claire. also, jamie is really the highlight of this entire book. people who say they didnt finish this book just for jamie are probably lying. lol. and immediately after finishing this, i watched like 10 episodes of the tv series, created a gaelic playlist on spotify, started a board on pinterest with pictures of scotland, and looked at flights. as i said, im now a little obsessed.

so although my feelings whilst reading this were closer to 3.5-4 stars, its my after reading feelings that im going to base my rating on.

Jessica Same. Obsession is the perfect word.

Karen Hogan I agree. It definitely made me want to visit Scotland. And I thought the actor who portrayed Jamie in the miniseries was spot on.

Emily Love this review!

message 5: by Joanna (new)

Joanna Smith Love Outlander. Love Claire and Jamie. Period.

jessica jessica - glad you feel the same! :)

karen - im enjoying the series so far, but i mentally imagined jamie as a little bit more moody/broody and the TV version of jamie is just so happy/sweet/innocent all the time. its taken me some time to get used to the change. lol.

nina - yes 100%!

emily - thank you so much! :)

joanna - yay! so happy to hear you love it! <3

Nicole My all time favorite serie (so far) ! I loveee Outlander! Happy to read you do as well. Enjoy the next book in the serie! The 3rd one is very good!

BookwormishMe Agreed. My fave book series (and awaiting the next installment.) However, I didn't love the tv series enough to stick with it past season 2. I don't know why. It's beautifully filmed and the acting is incredible, just didn't stick with it. I would say, you might want to give the next book a try. You never know....

Alexandra Elend Wolf I don't think the point of this first book was any other thing that for Jamie and Claire to meet. I mean, to me, this series is a romance and heavely focused on the romance. At least to me.

Alicia Fannin I loved the series but haven’t read the series yet. This makes me want to give it a go! Great review!!! I love how you shared your obsession with Outlander grew!

jessica nicole - thank you! really happy to hear you love this series so much! :)

bookworm - yeah, theres just something about this that, even though i really enjoyed this first book, i dont feel like i need more beyond that? i dunno. its a weird feeling. but who knows. i may pick up book 2 at some point. lol.

alexandra - thats a good point. i think i was under the impression the time travelling aspect would be more central to the story. but yes, looking at this strictly as a romance, the type of narrative fits.

alicia - so far, i think i like the TV series more? i feel like the characters are developed a little bit more than they are in the book. but it follows the events very faithfully!

message 12: by Ellida (new) - added it

Ellida Munch I love Jamie but I'm actually angry that I didn't like him as much in the book. I loved him deeply until we hit the part when he forces himself on Claire

Alexandra Elend Wolf Exactly, I know that it seems like the adventure is more its genre but to me, ever since I watched the TV Show it was clearly a romance.

Book two, and as far as I know the rest too, has a more concrete goal. It's more focused and conjoined. Though the romance it's still its main point.

I think, maybe, you should give the second book a try and see how you like it. Or, at least, continue with the show and judge from there. Because the show is pretty accurate and close to the books.

jessica ellida - yeah, i have mixed feelings about jamie in the TV series.

alexandra - thanks! im sure i will continue the series (beyond book 1 and season 1) at some point. :)

Randi Dodson This is exactly how I felt!
