Fresh off the viral success of Challengers, Luca Guadagnino is sure to have movie buffs buzzing again, when his adaptation of Queer hits theaters on November 27.
Starring Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey, the movie follows the story of Lee (Craig), a forty-something American expat and vagabond who falls in love with a recently-discharged Navy serviceman named Allerton (Starkey).
The movie premiered at the 81st Venice International Film Festival, where it was in competition for the Golden Lion. Now, it is about to finally get its theatrical release in the United States. Ahead, see everything you need to know about Queer.
The first official trailer is full of tense longing and sizzling imagery.
Early on October 29, the first trailer was released for Queer, and it offers viewers a look at the stark imagery and even ghostly effects that will seemingly define the movie.
“A wise old queen taught me that I had a duty to live,” Craig’s character says in the clip. “You know, to conquer hate with knowledge and sincerity and love. The difficulty is to convince someone else that he is really part of you.”

Queer arrives in theaters on November 27.
Sadly, Queer will not get a wide distribution in the U.S. The film, which is being distributed by A24 and Lucky Red, will get a limited release starting on November 27. To see if Queer is playing in a theater near you, and to claim your tickets now, you can check the listings here at Fandango.
It is an adaptation of the William S. Burroughs novel of the same name.
Queer is adapted from William S. Burroughs’s 1985 novel of the same name, which was originally written in the early ’50s, but was deemed too controversial to be published for decades. Guadagnino’s work is the first official film adaptation to be derived from the book.
Loosely based on real-life events that took place in Burroughs’s life, Queer is considered an extension of his first novel, Junky.
Back in the early 2010s, Steve Buscemi was in the process of directing an adaptation of the book, which was going to feature a screenplay from Oren Moverman. Moverman had even written the script a decade prior, and Buscemi held a live reading of it at the Sarasota Film Festival in 2010. However, for unknown reasons, the project never made it past the development stage.
Luca Guadagnino is reuniting with some of his Challengers collaborators.
For his second film of 2024, Guadagnino teamed up with a few familiar faces, including screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes, cinematographer Sayombhu Mukdeeprom, and musicians Trent Raznor and Atticus Ross, who all contributed to Challengers.
Based on the critical and commercial success of Challengers, it seems fair to say that Guadagnino and these collaborators will create even more magic with Queer.
The cast includes Daniel Craig, Drew Starkey, Omar Apollo, and more.
The cast is certainly stacked in Queer, with Craig, Starkey, Jason Schwartzman, Lesley Manville, Henry Zaga, Drew Droege, Ariel Schulman, David Lowery, Colin Bates, Perla Ambrosini, and Ronia Ava set to star. Meanwhile, singer-songwriter Omar Apollo is making his acting debut in the film.
