The AMC show Dark Winds is being exposed to a larger audience thanks to it arriving on Netflix, where you can stream both seasons yet produced right now. The show has both George R.R. If you've been meaning to watch the George R.R. Martin-executive produced murder mystery with a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score, now is your chance! The underappreciated AMC series "Dark Winds" is now finding a new audience on Netflix.
"Dark Winds" debuted on the streamer this week as part of a new Netflix deal with prestige cable channel AMC -- one that's also brought critical darlings like historical thriller "The Terror," weird meta-sitcom "Kevin Can F*** Himself," and gorgeous vampire melodrama "Interview with the Vampire" to the platform's new AMC hub. The licensing deal is surely a bid to get more eyes on these great shows, and so far, it's already paying off with several of them. According to viewership data site FlixPatrol, AMC shows like "Anne Rice's Mayfair Witches" and "Fear the Walking Dead" have already cracked the top 10 most-watched English-language shows for the streamer, with "Dark Winds" beating out...

A new crime drama series called “Dark Winds” has arrived on Netflix, and it is drawing wide acclaim for its authentic portrayal of Native American culture. Based on the Leaphorn & Chee book series, the show follows two Navajo police officers as they investigate a string of murders on the Navajo reservation in Arizona.
Set in the 1970s Southwest, “Dark Winds” immerses viewers in the stark landscape and traditions of the Diné (Navajo) people. Most of the dialogue is spoken in the Navajo language, Diné bizaad. The series also explores Indigenous folklore and spiritual beliefs. At the same time, it tells a compelling crime story with absorbing mystery plots.
Veteran actor Zahn McClarnon stars as Joe Leaphorn, a seasoned detective struggling with personal tragedy. Reviews praise McClarnon’s nuanced performance in the leading role. He brings depth and complexity to the character. Other positive reviews highlight the show’s realistic police...

Netflix has a lot of offerings this month but a huge one is that the streamer will be taking on a score of programs from AMC all releasing on Aug. 19. So which are the best to check out?
For years, AMC has been known for its terrific original series, from Mad Men to Breaking Bad, many of which are Emmy-winning hits. The network runs a nice gamut from drama to more action-oriented and thanks to a new deal with Netflix, nearly a dozen of their shows are hitting the streamer. Some may be good watches if a bit uneven (Mayfair Witches) and others not quite as well known.
However, there are some great shows to check out, and these half-dozen series are all worth checking out to show how this AMC roster on Netflix enhances the streamer.

The love towards westerns is easily understandable: which other genre can give us so many different stories at the same time? There’s always a pride and honor plotline, a romantic story, some family drama, and of course good-old fight scenes in a picturesque landscape.
For many years after the golden era with Wayne and Eastwood the role of an iconic western leading man went to Kevin Costner, especially amid the tremendous success of the Yellowstone series.
But we think it's only fair to mention another brilliant western performance by another A-list actor, Pierce Brosnan. The former James Bond and Mamma Mia star actually made quite an impression as Eli McCullough, the greedy Texas oil tycoon in a western series called The Son.
The Son is a multigenerational epic that tells the story of Eli’s life from his complicated childhood to the times when he becomes a father of the family.

Variety has shared a piece on 2024's streaming titles, confirming Echo is the second most-viewed series on Disney+ this year so far. It's an impressive achievement, particularly as Marvel Studios dropped all five episodes at once, leading to the show being quickly forgotten.
We've seen in recent years that weekly drops are much better for keeping people talking about new titles (which goes against Netflix's once highly successful streaming model of releasing every episode at once).
Rumour has it Echo suffered from quite a few issues behind the scenes, with six instalments becoming five, as a result. That could explain why they hit Disney+ on the same day, though reviews were somewhat positive as is evident from the show's 71% Rotten Tomatoes score.
However, putting this news into context is the fact, "[Percy Jackson and the Olympians] accounts for nearly a quarter of Disney+ original series viewing time so far...

“House of the Dragon” Releases Dueling Season 2 Trailers
Are you Team Green or Team Black?
HBO has released two new trailers for the upcoming second season of its “Game of Thrones” spinoff series “House of the Dragon.”
The new trailers, which set the series’ return on the cabler and Max late this spring, respectively focus on Princess Rhaenrya Targaryen (played by Emma D’Arcy), Prince Daemon (Matt Smith), and their black faction, and on Alicent Hightower’s (Olivia Cooke) green King’s Landing team of Alicent.
The fantasy drama series, based on author George R.R. Martin’s book “Fire & Blood,” details the history of House Targaryen nearly 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones.” Season 1 followed Rhaenyra in her fight to be named the chosen heir of King Viserys I (Patty Considine) and the lead-up to the Dance of the Dragons.

We’re back in December 2020, and Paramount announces a new dinosaur-themed animated series titled Ark: The Animated Series. The series was announced via a trailer during the 2020 Video Game Awards, also revealing that the series would be featuring a star-filled cast that would include Gerard Butler, David Tennant, Michelle Yeoh, Jeffrey Wright, Zahn McClarnon, Elliot Page, Karl Urban, Malcolm McDowell, Alan Tudyk, Russell Crowe, and Vin Diesel, all of whom will also serve as the executive producers of the series.
The series was based on the Ark: Survival Evolved video game, with the game’s creators Jeremy Stieglitz and Jesse Rapczak serving as the creators of the series as well. In June 2022, as the series entered post-production, it was revealed that both Monica Bellucci and Dee Bradley Baker had joined the series as well, with Gareth Coker as the composer. And that was more or less it for a while.

Exclusive: The Sydney Sweeney & Paul Walter Hauser title, Americana, which was one of the prolific acquisition titles from last year’s SXSW, has finally seen its worldwide rights go to Lionsgate.
Why did a movie with big stars and 100% on Rotten Tomatoes take so long to sell? I understand part of the hold-up stems from the pic’s financier, Bron Studios, going into bankruptcy.
The Tony Tost written and directed movie follows local outsiders and outcasts in a small South Dakota town whose lives violently intertwine after a rare artifact falls onto the black market. Americana also stars pop singer Halsey, Eric Dane, Zahn McClarnon, Gavin Maddox Bergman, Simon Rex, Derek Hinkey, Toby Huss, and Harriet Sansom Harris.
Pic is produced by Alex Saks. EPs are Aaron L. Gilbert, Steven Thibault, Alison-Jane Roney, Paris Kassidokostas-Latsis, Terry Dougas, and Jean-Luc de Fanti.

Per Variety, Alex Cox is ready to return to the bizarre world of car repossession and extraterrestrials. The outlet reports that the director is set to helm Repo Man 2: The Wages of Beer, a long-belated sequel to the 1984 cult classic.
The original movie starred Emilio Estevez as Otto, a young punk who is recruited by a car repossession agency and finds himself in pursuit of a Chevrolet Malibu that is wanted for a $20,000 bounty – and has something otherworldly stashed in its trunk. The sequel will pick up “after Otto has boarded his trusty 1967 Chevy Malibu to journey across the infinities of time and space. In that time, he has aged exactly 90 minutes.” As Estevez is naturally a little too old to reprise the role, Kiowa Gordon has stepped in to play Otto in the sequel.

[This story contains spoilers for Echo.]
No one has a story quite like Echo star Alaqua Cox.
Despite no prior acting experience, Cox, at the encouragement of friends, auditioned on a lark for a coded project that was looking for somebody exactly like her: “an Indigenous deaf woman in their 20s.” Cox then went through a three-month audition process for what would become the supporting role of Maya Lopez on Marvel Studios’ Hawkeye. The brass at Marvel were so impressed by Cox that development of her own spinoff series, Echo, was fast-tracked within a few months of her Hawkeye casting and the beginning of that series’ production.
Cox grew up on the Menominee Indian Reservation in Keshena, Wisconsin, and just three years after her Marvel casting became public, she’s already seeing the impact that Indigenous representation is having back home.

Around halfway through the fifth episode of Marvel’s Echo, viewers are dropped into the experience of a Choctaw Nation powwow. It’s a first-of-its-kind moment for the MCU, featuring dancers in regalia singing to the drum-driven music. In a poorly lit nearby barn stands Alaqua Cox’s Maya Lopez, in a face-off alongside the women of her family against a notorious New York crime kingpin, Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio).
Director Sydney Freeland pitched the moment to Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige by recalling how she grew up reading Marvel Comics and attending powwows.
“I’ve read comic books at powwows, for sure — I’ve probably fallen asleep reading comic books at powwows — but those two things never overlapped,” Freeland tells The Hollywood Reporter. “So to have those things come together, to have Kingpin at a powwow, it is a very surreal experience.”

Before she was cast in Marvel’s 2021 Disney+ series “Hawkeye,” Alaqua Cox had never considered becoming an actor. But then several friends sent her the same flyer looking for Indigenous deaf women in their 20s to try out for a new TV show.
“I said, ‘No, I don’t want to do that,’ and then two other friends sent it to me,” Cox says via an Asl interpreter. “Now a bunch of people have sent it to me, so I thought, ‘I’ll give it a shot.’”
Cox went through a three-month audition process to play Maya Lopez, a tough-as-nails enforcer for crime lord Wilson “Kingpin” Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio), who comes to question her loyalties when she learns Fisk ordered the death of her father, William (Zahn McClarnon). This review contains major spoilers for all five episodes of Echo.
In 2021, Marvel Studios introduced the character of Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) in Hawkeye. Lopez was the complex and violent right hand of New York crime lord Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio), but towards the end of that miniseries she came to realize that Fisk was behind the murder of her father, so she cornered him in a back street and shot him in the head.
After so decisively confronting Kingpin and freeing herself from his grip, you might wonder why both Cox and D’Onofrio are back in the five-episode spinoff series, Echo. The answer is that Maya apparently needed to confront Kingpin again and free herself from his grip, but this time in a more unsatisfying way than before. Marvel, I’m losing my mind.

Echo, Marvel and Disney’s new five-part limited series, is a groundbreaking piece of television.
This isn’t the same — at least not necessarily — as being a great piece of television, but let’s start by giving credit where credit is due.
Doing an ostensible superhero show — it isn’t always clear that’s what Echo is — in which your protagonist is an Indigenous, deaf amputee will always be steering your vehicle off the paved roads and into uncharted territory. Doing it in a way that respects and honors all three of those outsider experiences without making it feel like you’re working your way down a representational checklist is an audacious and worthwhile thing.
In that respect, Echo is a triumph. It’s a series of moments that alternately had me thinking, “Huh, that feels different and right” and “Huh, I can’t believe somebody was able to do that in a Marvel show.

All of the signaling around Echo has suggested yet another Marvel Cinematic Universe fiasco in a long line of them in the years since Avengers: Endgame. The miniseries, spinning off a supporting character from 2021’s Hawkeye, was originally set to premiere last November, then got pushed back to an early January window that’s rarely where networks or streamers put their best shows. It is the first binge release of any Marvel Studios-produced series, where Disney+ has previously done very well getting fans to come back week after week...

There were two prevailing takeaways from the "Hawkeye" series on Disney+. The first was that Florence Pugh makes everything better, even when all she does is show up and eat macaroni and cheese for a scene. The other was that Alaqua Cox's portrayal of the deaf Native American Tracksuit Mafia mercenary Maya Lopez was incredibly compelling and that the character herself was more than deserving of a spinoff series.
That's exactly what we're getting with "Echo," a series that follows Maya as she evades her crime boss "uncle" Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin (Vincent D'Onofrio), and his forces after that whole "shooting him" thing on "Hawkeye." The show's trailers have teased it as a return to the violent, so-called "street-level" drama of Marvel's Netflix series, complete with appearances by Fisk and a certain Devil of Hell's Kitchen. But more than that, "Echo" is about Maya reconnecting with her Native American...

Disney+‘s latest Marvel entry Echo is taking us deeper into the story behind Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) who was first introduced onscreen in 2021’s Hawkeye. But fret not if you missed the initial introduction because this new series under Marvel’s Spotlight banner means you don’t have to be in the know about Marvel’s current timeline as Echo gives viewers the true origin story of Maya. In order to understand her better, viewers get a closer look at Maya’s family, who live in Oklahoma as she trades in the gritty streets of New York City for time spent among her Indigenous Choctaw community. Fleeing from Wilson Fisk, a.k.a. Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio) after shooting him in Hawkeye, Maya must face the family and friends she left behind when her late father William (Zahn McClarnon) relocated them. Among the individuals she’s reuniting with after years...

Let’s be honest: the MCU is in a tough place. Even excellent entries like Loki season two and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 have failed to make people forget about the abysmal Secret Invasion and imperfect movies Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels. Also, did you know that What If…? season two happened?
Marvel will be largely laying low for 2024, with Deadpool 3 the only movie on the film release calendar. But the tv shows will still happen, starting with Echo, the first to be released under the Ma-Rated Marvel Spotlight heading.
Based on a character created by David Mack and Joe Quesada, Echo spins out of the Hawkeye television series. In that series, we meet the deaf martial arts expert Maya Lopez, played by Alaqua Cox. In Hawkeye, Echo blames Clint Barton for the death of her father William (Zahn McClarnon), a lie told by her adoptive uncle,...
