William Tregoe spent a few seasons in Indianapolis, Indiana, directing shows at the Avondale Playhouse. This was a tent theatre in the parking lot of The Meadows Shopping Center.

He also played roles in some of the productions.

Among those former Hollywood stars he directed were Frances Farmer and Reginald Gardiner in a production of Noel Coward's "Present Laughter" on July 26-31, 1960. That year was his 7th season as Avondale.

He also appeared at the Pasadena Playhouse with Hugh Marlowe in "The Play's The Thing" in 1960.

He and Stewart Bradley produced the West Coast premiere of "Rashomon" at the ABC Playhouse renamed the BradTree Theater in their honor in the spring of 1960.
