- Gerry Barker finds a lost boy whose rich father is extorted into paying a ransom for his return but the boy accidentally dies and Gerry goes to prison.
- When young Danny Lambert runs away from camp in south-central Colorado, he becomes the object of a park-wide-search by his wealthy father Robertson Lambert. He is found by Gerry Barker and told to wait at an abandoned look-out tower while he goes for help. Instead, Barker calls the father and demands $200,000 ransom. The money is delivered and Barker buries most of it. Meanwhile, the panicky boy has fallen from the tower to his death, and Barker drops the body off a cliff. The FBI, led by James Madden, capture Barker but can't convict him of kidnapping and he is given only five years for extortion and sent to Casabel Island Prison. There he is assigned a cell with Rollo Lambar, Alamo Smith, Benny Kelly and Machine Gun Mason. The FBI have now traced an affiliation between Barker and Emily Evans, a nurse at Danny's camp. The five cell-mates, led by Rollo, who plans to kill Benny and dress him in Barker's clothes to throw off the police, execute an underwater prison escape, and head north for the ransom money.—Les Adams <longhorn1939@suddenlink.net>
- Having a rap sheet for such, Gerry Barker has been convicted for extortion of a small amount of money found on his possession and sentenced for one to five at Cascabel Federal Penitentiary. Speculation by most in the know is that he will serve his relatively short time as the model prisoner, only to retrieve what was the rest of the extorted money, a total of $200,000, after his release. Further speculation is that he is guilty of a more serious crime of kidnapping and possibly murder, that part of the case yet unsolved, with he revealing nothing to that effect in his cold demeanor, the reason he receives the moniker "The Iceman" by the media and ultimately the public. Despite the relatively minor extortion offense, the warden decides to house Barker with four of the most hardened criminals, namely murderers 'Machine Gun' Mason and Benny Kelly, smuggler Alamo Smith, and the top man, bank robber Rollo Lamar, to see if they can melt his icy demeanor in viewing a convict for what he is purported to have done with disdain. The play between the four and Barker is played out under Rollo's plan for him. Meanwhile, Royal Gorge Park Ranger Will Erickson and FBI Agent James Madden continue their investigation hopefully to conclude the central item surrounding Barker's conviction by discovering evidence to his guilt or innocence in the matter for which he was not charged.—Huggo
