Surprise! Legendary director Barbet Schroeder, in Locarno to introduce his latest doc “Ricardo and Painting,” was greeted with a Special Tribute Award before the screening.

Hodges’ longtime friend, Mike Kaplan, confirmed his death to Et calling the late director “a great friend and a great filmmaker.”

“For a part of his career, he was under-appreciated, and he is not anymore,” the film producer shared. “‘Get Carter’ was a huge success all over the world. He had a great sense of humour. All of his movies were entrenched with humour and personality.”

Born in Bristol, England in 1932, Hodges first became an accountant before doing his required military service by serving on a British minesweeper. He began his career in show business as a teleprompter operator for British television.

The filmmaker behind Get Carter and Flash Gordon died on Saturday (17 December) of heart failure at his home in Dorset.

His death was confirmed by producer Mike Kaplan, a friend and collaborator of Hodges’, who said he died of heart failure.

Born in Bristol in 1932, Hodges worked as a chartered accountant and in the Navy under national service before beginning a career in the screen industries.

His first media job was as a teleprompter operator and he quickly rose up the ranks in UK television.

He made his feature debut in 1971 with Get Carter, which he wrote and directed. Starring Michael Caine, it follows a London gangster who returns home to Newcastle after learning about the death of his brother.

Hodges’ good friend Mike Kaplan and producer of “I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead” confirmed the director’s death to multiple media outlets.

She’d lead in both Jon Turteltaub’s charming romance “While You Were Sleeping” and Irwin Winkler’s cybercrime thriller “The Net” in 1995. The following year, she’d star in rom-com “Two If By Sea,” legal drama “A Time to Kill,” and historical novel adaption “In Love and War.” Of course, the future two-time Academy Award nominee (one time winner) was just getting started.

Damon Lindelof and Tara Hernandez’s Peacock series “Mrs. Davis” has cast Margo Martindale, Andy McQueen, and Ben Chaplin.

The trio join previously announced series leads Betty Gilpin and Jake McDorman in the series. Exact plot details are being kept under wraps, aside from the fact the show is described as an exploration of faith versus technology. It was previously reported that Gilpin will play a nun who battles an artificial intelligence in the show.

Martindale is a celebrated character actress with three Emmy wins to her name — one for “Justified” and two for “The Americans.” Her most recent TV credit is for “Impeachment: American Crime Story,” in which she played Lucianne Goldberg, who encouraged Linda Tripp to record conversations with Monica Lewinsky. Martindale is also known for playing a heightened version of herself in the critically-acclaimed Netflix animated series “BoJack Horseman.”

Ryan Reynolds has managed to coax beloved 80s actor Rick Moranis out of retirement for a hilarious new ad for his mobile network company, Mint Mobile. The Ghostbusters star has been famously retired from Hollywood since the 90s, when he elected to focus on raising his children. In recent years, he’s appeared in the odd project here and there, but nothing major. Now, though, the Deadpool actor has got him back for this commercial just to give us something to smile about in 2020.

This morning, Reynolds dropped the ad online on his Twitter account. “Today @Mintmobile is launching unlimited for just $30 And bringing back Rick Moranis,” he said in his caption. “Suck it, 2020.”

When he came onboard as artistic director at the Deauville American Film Festival in 1995, Bruno Barde went about retooling the event.

He started by introducing the official competition — to showcase new voices in American independent cinema before a predominantly French jury — and thought to make his vision for the festival clear with an unmistakable visual.

As August winds down, it’s time to look ahead to everything that’s hitting the major streaming services in September. As always, there’s an enormous haul of originals and newly licensed titles going up across Netflix, Disney Plus, HBO Max, Hulu and Prime Video over the month, including content from every genre out there.

The first day of September brings the usual lengthy list of movies arriving on most of the sites. Just a few of the highlights include all three Back to the Future films returning to Netflix, every entry in the Twilight saga arriving on Hulu and countless iconic movies going up on HBO Max, including Grease, Miss Congeniality and V for Vendetta. Also, Doctor Who fans will want to take note, as the most recent season of the show lands on HBO Max the same day.

Although it still has a long way to go to catch up to Netflix, HBO Max is gradually building a reputation for both an impressive library of content and its own original programming. As well as reportedly working on a number of Batman-focused series, the WarnerMedia streamer is also absorbing shows from DC Universe, and funding the Snyder Cut of Justice League. We now know what’s coming to HBO Max in September, and there’s plenty there for subscribers to sink their teeth into.

The big original series highlight next month is the Ridley Scott-produced Raised by Wolves, which explores two androids raising human children. WarnerMedia’s grand streaming experiment continues apace with HBO Max’s list of new releases for September 2020.

This month, HBO Max is bring some serious dramatic heat with the Ridley Scott-directed sci-fi series Raised by Wolves arriving on Sept. 3. And if science fiction isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, then HBO Max has identified something that is: true crime. The Murders at White House Farm will arrive at a date to be determined in September.

In addition to those intriguing original offerings, HBO Max is making the best of its WarnerMedia library this month. Doctor Who season 12 makes its long-awaited streaming debut on Sept. 1. Also arriving on the first of the month are Clerks, Election, and the hopefully-not-too-timely V for Vendetta.

Recent horror hit The Invisible Man arrives on Sept. 19. It is complemented by HBO Max original comedy Unpregnant on Sept. 10.

Exclusive: Hell on Wheels creators Joe Gayton and Tony Gayton have signed with APA.

The sibling writing-producing duo created the praised historical drama series Hell on Wheels, which aired for five seasons on AMC.

Together, the veteran scribes have written numerous pilots, including Southern Comfort for Fox and The Novice for USA, as well as the 2010 feature film Faster, starring Dwayne Johnson. Separately, Tony Gayton also wrote The Salton Sea, directed by D.J. Caruso and starring Val Kilmer, and Murder by Numbers, starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Gosling. Joe Gayton wrote Ernest R. Dickenson-directed Bulletproof, starring Adam Sandler and Damon Wayans.

Joe and Tony Gayton are also repped by attorney Karl Austen.

Ryan Reynolds never misses an opportunity to take hilarious self-deprecating shots at some of the more ignominious entries from his notoriously checkered CV of movies and television. The latest such example, a campaign for his Mint Mobile premium wireless company, takes a shot at his film flop, Foolproof.

Enter Mint Mobile+, a mock streaming service set up by Reynolds, bearing an accompanying website that entices would-be subscribers by showcasing the content available to stream. However, said content simply consists of one movie, Foolproof, which has been repackaged in numerous entries across the platform’s entire (Disney+ imitating) interface. R.D. Call, an actor who appeared in seven Sean Penn films, a trio by director Walter Hill and such TV series as Walker, Texas Ranger and Ez Streets, died Feb. 27 of complications from back surgery in Layton, Utah. He was 70.

Whedon’s series “The Nevers” has cast Olivia Williams, James Norton, Tom Riley, Ann Skelly, Ben Chaplin, Pip Torrens, Zackary Momoh, Amy Manson, Nick Frost, Rochelle Neil, Eleanor Tomlinson, and Denis O’Hare. They join previously announced cast member Laura Donnelly, who will star as Amalia True.

“The Nevers,” which was ordered straight-to-series last July, is described as an epic science fiction drama about a gang of Victorian women who find themselves with unusual abilities, relentless enemies, and a mission that might change the world.
