New York-based director/producer Katy Scoggin has worked with high-profile U.S. documentary filmmaker/journalist Laura Poitras on two shorts and three features, notably as co-producer and Dp on Poitras’ Oscar-winner “Citizenfour” and Cannes Directors’ Fortnight’s “Risk.”
Poitras now serves as executive producer on Scoggin’s feature debut “Flood,” one of six creative documentaries to be pitched as works in progress April 16, at the Visions du Réel festival in Nyon, Switzerland.
“Flood” centers on Scoggin’s journey to repair her relationship with her former missionary father, with whom she has become estranged. As the story unfolds, she relies on evolution to try to grasp change over time: in the fossil record, in American evangelicalism and in her own shift away from her parents’ religion and back home to reconnect.
The documentary was produced by Scoggin and Will Lennon for Archelon Films, and executive produced by Poitras, Nico Opper and Adam Blackman.

This Halo article contains spoilers.
There’s no denying that the Halo season 2 finale delivered the goods, not only finally getting Master Chief and Cortana to the ring itself but also setting up storylines from the original game that will hopefully pay off in big ways in a third season. But despite a cliffhanger finale that introduced both 343 Guilty Spark and the Flood parasite, and that ended with John-117 preparing to trek deeper into the depths of the ring, we still haven’t heard anything about Halo season 3.
Not that the Halo team isn’t already thinking about what could come next. In fact, judging from comments made earlier this year, they’re more than ready to finish the fight.
“You always have to assume the best, right? And you wanna be writing with that long-term view in mind. So, definitely there’s story beyond season 2. We would love to be able to explore,...

Like we have stated previously as well, the Halo TV series has exercised a number of creative liberties when it comes to the core storyline, making changes that sometimes feel unnecessary, and the total omission of the Flood storyline in the first season was one of them. Given how much of a role this hideous intergalactic parasite plays in the lore of Halo, the adverse reaction of the fans was justified, and the makers learned their lesson in due time.
In the very first episode of the second season, a major Flood teaser was given through the insurrectionist survivor of Madrigal, Kwan Ha’s, conversation with Soren’s son Kessler, who mentions the possible arrival of a primordial evil that threatens to become the end of everything. In the cave paintings of Soren’s quarter in Rubble, Kwan finds ominous signs of the presence of Flood. But even Kwan didn...

Swiss documentary film festival Visions du Réel has unveiled its program for film professionals, VdR-Industry, which includes 29 projects in various stages of production. These will be pitched during the four-day event that runs April 14 through April 17, alongside the fest.
VdR-Industry, which sees more than a thousand film professionals descend on the small Swiss town of Nyon on the edge of Lake Geneva, aims at providing an opportunity to connect filmmakers with financing and distribution opportunities at a time when the documentary sector is faced with a contraction of funding from streamers and increased corporate consolidation.
Speaking to Variety, VdR’s new head of industry, Alice Burgin, says she’s excited to welcome a raft of new players this year such as the U.S.’s the Points North Institute and the Whickers Foundation, which support emerging nonfiction storytellers, the Catapult film fund, which backs doc filmmakers in the early stages of funding,...

In my childhood, I chanced upon a DVD of a movie that instilled a phobia of crocodiles in me. I later learned that the reptile shown in the film was an alligator, and the movie was aptly titled Alligator. Directed by Brandon Slagle, the new movie The Flood mixes the fun of legendary man-eating alligators with the background of a plot that seems to be inspired by Rio Bravo. Such films are always based on how absurdly the ‘gator’ will devour its next prey, and The Flood delivers the goods. It does begin by pretending to be a much more serious film than it actually is, but as soon as the famished gators show up, everything falls into place. Just gather your friends, and you might have a movie night on hand.
The plot revolves around Sheriff Jo Newmann in Louisiana, who gets a request to accommodate five violent criminals...

There’s just something about a killer animal film that can provide so much entertainment that it’s a shock we don’t get more of them. But there’s also an inherent schlockiness to them that makes it understandable. Outside of Jaws, there are few that are considered high art. So it’s easy to go into most with lower expectations and end up having a fun time with them. The Flood is a film that has its problems (check out my review Here) but it’s the cast that makes it worth it. Casper Van Dien continues to be one of my favorite people to interview and Nicky Whelan managed to land herself on that list rather quickly. So join me for these really fun conversations as we get into some pretty shocking revelations of what went down on set in Bangkok.

Grey's Anatomy introduced an unexpected new character in its midseason finale. Viacom is adding a trio of channels from its recently-acquired Pluto TV to My5, the on-demand service of Channel 5, the U.K. free-to-air broadcaster it also owns.
Ad-supported Ott service Pluto TV is already available in the U.K., but the My5 deal widens its distribution. It also bulks up My5 at a time when traditional broadcasters are keen to bulk up their on-demand offerings in the face of fierce competition from the streamers. My5 has a raft Channel 5 shows and the broadcaster has been adding third-party content as it beefs up the service.
Pluto TV Drama, Pluto TV Movies and Pluto TV Food hit My5 on Thursday. The foodie service has shows including Gordon Ramsay’s “The F Word” and “Kitchen Nightmares,” and the drama channel Tom Hardy series “Flood” among others. Bruce Willis film “The Assassination” and Kate Beckinsale starrer “Nothing But the Truth” are among the titles on the movie offering.

As ever, Suchet is joined by cast regulars Hugh Fraser (Sharpe), Philip Jackson (Little Voice), and Pauline Moran.
The Mystery of the Blue Train concerns the murder of an American heiress and the theft of a jewel from aboard a train. American fans will recognize many of the guest co-stars including Elliott Gould (Friends) and Roger Lloyd-Pack (Vicar of Dibley). In Cards on a Table, a wealthy Londoner (Alexander Siddig) arranges an unusual gathering involving four murderers and four detectives. In After The Funeral, Poirot is called in to investigate when a wealthy man changes his will just before his untimely demise.

Highly readable; dull; funnier than expected – from the Telegraph to the New York Times, reviewers of Jk Rowling's first post-Potter literary outing, The Casual Vacancy, are far from reaching a consensus
"No doubt there will be reviewers who have already decided to pour vitriol upon [The Casual Vacancy] no matter its merits," said Jonathan Ruppin, of Foyles, yesterday, and it appears he might have had a point. Reviews have been pouring in for Jk Rowling's first adult novel this morning, and they are nothing if not mixed.
"A solid, traditional and determinedly unadventurous English novel," wrote Theo Tait for the Guardian, while the famously vituperative Michiko Kakutani, reviewing The Casual Vacancy for the New York Times, was unimpressed. "It's as though writing about the real world inhibited Ms Rowling's miraculously inventive imagination, and in depriving her of the tension between the mundane and the marvellous constrained her ability to create a two-, never mind three-dimensional tale,...

In July of 2009, A&E released the Hercule Poirot and Jane Marple DVD set that included all of those included in this new Great Detectives Anthology. The difference between this set and that 2009 release is the addition of 5 Sherlock Holmes mysteries (featuring Peter Cushing), the omission of 7 Poirot mysteries one Marple mystery. Exactly why this change in the old set was made is hard to say, but the set definitely benefits from the addition of Sherlock Holmes to the mix, it immediately makes the set more palatable to a wider audience who may not have foreknowledge of the two comparatively lesser known detectives who headlined the first set.
The Sherlock Holmes mysteries included in the set are “The Hound of the Baskervilles”, “A Study in Scarlet”, “The Boscombe Valley Mystery”, “The Sign of Four” and “The Blue Carbuncle”.
Just like with the original Poirot & Marple set, they’re oddly out of order,...

Film: ‘Flood’; Cast: Robert Carlyle, Jessalyn Gilsig, Tom Courtenay, Joanne Whalley; Director: Tony Mitchell; Rating: *
Films dealing with catastrophe are a Hollywood specialty. One director, Ronald Emmirich, has even made it his business to destroy the world with newer natural calamities in his films. That a British film can match this effects extravaganza yet is wishful thinking.
The British film ‘Flood’ fails in every department.
A storm at sea coincides with high tide and leads to water rushing up the Thames, flooding most of London. When millions of lives are threatened, you can.

Agatha Christie gifted the world with a series of mysteries so intricate and well-conceived that her name has a legendary aura in the world of mystery literature. With so much source material in the Agatha Christie library it really should come as no surprise that Agatha Christie: Poirot and Agatha Christie Marple, brilliant adaptations of two of her most famous detectives, feature compelling stories for viewers who find the offerings of the small and silver screens sorely lacking in good whodunits. David Suchet and Joan Hickson embody the characters with such familiarity and comfortable style that make each installment a feature-film quality presentation.
Keep in mind that this box set is by no means a complete collection of either series, but rather a compilation of the two with a rhyme and reason to the selections. The Poirot mysteries aren’t even a random selection of the so-called “best” of the...

Ta fan Ashley writes about how Twilight gives backnbspTwilight Gives Back by AshleyIf all else perished and he remained I should still continue to be and if all else remained and he were annihilated the universe would turn to a mighty stranger. These words should not be unfamiliar to Twilighters for they are found in the twentiethseven chapter Needs of Eclipse. But these are not Bellas wordsno they belong to a literary heroine onehundredsixty years before Bellas time Catherine Earnshaw of Wuthering Heights. Though the stories are worlds and ages apart Stephenie Meyers comparisons between the tumultuous Wuthering Heights and her own Eclipse are spot on. Anyone acquainted with both novels for instance could see the irony behind Bellas argument during Eclipses beginning Well I hope youre smart enough to stay away from someone so selfish. Catherine is really the source of all the trouble not Heathcliff 29. Wuthering Heights a...

This will mark the premiere of the years most provocatively titled film: Lesbian Vampire Killers. Starring James Corden and Matthew Holden as a pair of lost hikers who encounter a strange lesbian vampire ritual, the film follows in the footsteps of Shaun of the Dead in providing a dark and quirky British look at horror films. More in focus with our interest, the film boasts an energetic and lively score by Debbie Wiseman, who follows up her popular soundtracks to Arséne Lupin and Flood with another bombastic work. This time however she had to find the right balance between horror and comedy as she explains in the following discussion...
How did this project first find you?
I first met with the director Phil Claydon about two and a half years ago when the project was still in development. He'd enjoyed listening to some of my music, particularly my score for Arsene Lupin,...

Lionsgate U.K. to unleash 'Flood'
LONDON -- U.K. based production house Power has inked a deal with Lionsgate U.K. to secure a theatrical release for Flood, the company's first foray into movie production, it announced Thursday.
The movie will air on commercial net ITV early next year after Lionsgate has rolled it out on a limited release in central London, a Power spokesperson said.
The cast of the $30 million movie, directed by Tony Mitchell, includes Robert Carlyle, Jessalyn Gilsi, David Suchet and Joanne Whalley.
Flood, scripted by Power founder Justin Bodle and Matthew Cope, is based on the book of the same name by Richard Doyle and produced by Bodle and independent producer Peter McAleese. It details the story of the aftermath of a tidal wave that swamps the British capital.
Produced by Power in association with South Africa's Moonlighting Films and Canada's Muse Entertainment Enterprises, Flood was shot last year on location in London and South Africa.
