In advance of the series’ upcoming Season 3 premiere, AMC Networks announced today that it has renewed the critically acclaimed and popular noir drama Dark Winds for a fourth season. The expanded, eight-episode, third season premieres March 9 on AMC and AMC+.

Season 4 of Dark Winds, which will begin filming in Santa Fe, New Mexico in March, will also consist of eight, hour-long episodes. The new season will also see the directorial debut of series’ star and executive producer, Zahn McClarnon, and will debut exclusively on AMC and AMC+ in 2026.

“When we greenlit the first season of Dark Winds, we saw the potential for an authentic and long-running franchise that could live alongside the worlds we were building around The Walking Dead and Anne Rice,” said Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks.

AMC has brightened Dark Winds fans’ day by announcing the critically acclaimed drama has been renewed for season four. The early renewal order comes just weeks before the premiere of season three.

It has taken over a year to get this new season going since its greenlight in 2023, but Deadline is now reporting that the AMC network has already renewed Dark Winds for a fourth season before the third officially broadcasts. “Dark Winds” has been renewed for a fourth season at AMC. The news comes ahead of the March 9 premiere of Season 3.

The series is set in the ’70s and stars Zahn McClarnon as Navajo Tribal Police lieutenant Joe Leaphorn who works with officers Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) and Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten) to solve the mysteries behind violent crimes on their reservation. Season 3 will pick up six months after the events of Season 2 and follow Leaphorn and Chee as they investigate two boys’ disappearance with only an abandoned bicycle and blood-stained patch of ground as evidence while Manuelito stumbles across a human and drug smuggling conspiracy while attempting to settle into her new life as part of Border Patrol, 500 miles from home.

McClarnon will make his directorial debut during Season 4, which will air in 2026.

The network has renewed the thriller for a fourth season. The news comes ahead of the premiere of its third season on March 9.

The news is not a huge surprise given the boost that Dark Winds seems to have gotten from its airing on Netflix. The company has renewed the series, based on Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn & Chee novels, for a fourth season. The pickup comes about two weeks before the March 9 premiere of season three on AMC and streamer AMC+.

Just over a month after Walmart closed a $2.3 billion deal to acquire Vizio to help further its ambitions in the connected TV advertising space, the retailer has unveiled a new bundling plan for consumers with two smaller streaming platforms.

AMC+ and Starz will be bundled to Vizio customers at a rate of $13.99 a month (about $7 less than it’d cost if the subscriptions were purchased separately), the company said on Monday. Vizio, which disclosed in December that it had 19 million accounts for its SmartCast operating system, is being leveraged by Walmart on a battlefield that also includes Roku, Samsung, Apple TV and Amazon’s Fire TV.

Leaphorn appears badgered by his demons after leaving B.J. Vines (John Diehl) in the desert to freeze to death during the second season of the noir thriller. “When I was a boy, when I went to school, we were taught that the monsters walked the Earth. Exclusive: Jenna Elfman, best known for her starring role in the 1997 ABC sitcom Dharma & Greg, is returning to the network with a recurring role on another multi-camera comedy series, the upcoming Shifting Gears, headlined by fellow ABC sitcom star Tim Allen.
