"Die Alone" is a surprising departure from the usual zombie fare, offering a more character-driven approach that's heavy on drama and light on the undead. While it might not satisfy those craving hordes of shambling creatures, it delivers a thought-provoking tale.
The film centers on Ethan, a lone survivor grappling with memory loss and a desperate search for his lost love. He is found by Mae, who brings a sense of mystery and intrigue to the story, offering a glimmer of hope amidst the Ethan's bleakness.
The unique twist in this film involves the plant-based virus that has transformed humans into plant-zombie hybrids. This departure from the traditional undead trope adds a layer of originality quite possibly inspired by the tree zombie in "The Walking Dead" TV series. But zombie gore hounds will not find that here, but instead find that it is a subplot to the story which is a drama.
While some viewers may find the slower pace and lack of action-packed zombie sequences disappointing, Die Alone offers a more intimate and character-driven experience. It's a film that rewards patient viewers with a well-crafted story and strong performances if you don't predict the outcome ahead of time.

It's a zombie apocalypse movie. The story is quite good. The story is what makes the movie quite decent, there's a mystery element to it. It's a serious movie, there's no comedic elements, just horror and drama. The runtime is less than 90 minutes so the pacing is good.
Carrie Ann Moss is one of the main characters, Frank Grillo has a minor part he has about 15 minutes toward the end. The acting is good from everybody.
The zombie effects and gore is decent but there's not too much of it. Still I would say it's not suitable for younger audiences. In fact the entire movie is most definitely adults only.
Worth a watch for fans of the genre.

An honest review: I enjoyed this movie, apocalyptic movies like these are my favorite. Carrie -Anne Moss and Frank Grillo star in this zombie thriller. The world has succumbed to mysterious creatures during a virus outbreak. The movie takes a different turn in originality. Carrie Anne Moss was good in the movie, I loved her one liner quips, and Frank Grillo looked great when he showed up on screen. The finale of the movie had me interested as I didn't want to look away. The special effects was ok but the plot kept me interested. Such a sad and tragic story, kudos to all involved. I'd recommend this movie, not bad.

After the worldwide destruction of nature, it revenges and releases a virus lethal to humans. There is an outbreak and the young Ethan (Douglas Smith) and his girlfriend Emma (Kimberly-Sue Murray), who is a physician, flee from the city to the house by the lake they own. Ethan is tired and sleeps while driving, crashing their car into a tree. When he wakes up, he does not see Emma and looks for her. He is saved from two armed strangers by a middle-aged woman, Mae (Carrie-Anne Moss), and she brings him to her house. Ethan has amnesia and the right forearm in a cast but wants to look for Emma. Along the days, he has recollections of pieces of his life until he recalls what happened to Emma and him.
"Die Alone" (2024) is a movie underrated in IMDB, with an original dark storyline and excellent screenplay where the viewer has Ethan's shattered memories only to guess Carrie-Anne Moss has another excellent performance in the role of a mysterious woman that protects Ethan from the dangers of the outside world. The mystery of who is Mae is not easy to be found and only close to the end of the story the secrets are disclosed to the viewer. The conclusion is very sad. My vote is seven.

So, I'll confess, I don't get the low score of the movie has on here. The story was original, even if it started slowish, it was well written, the characters didn't do stupid things that annoy the hell out of me in this genre, also the actors played really well.
Yes, I had a hunch around the mid about the punch line, but in the end, it was way more than I imagined it will be.
The filming was nice too, cinematic, places well picked, no shaky camera bs, well selected landscapes.
If I had to pick some negatives, it could be Frank Grillo's short role in the movie and that I expected a bit more zombie menace.

But I watched until the end. The acting from most of the cast was fine. But as a general matter, I found the male lead to not be good. He just couldn't carry the relationship he was supposed to have. And it took me out of the story.
About halfway through, the plotline becomes obvious. And that wasnt a deal breaker. The plot itself is kind of interesting. Sort of a The Last of Us kind of scenario, just not nearly as interesting or as well constructed.
I wouldn't really recommend it, but if you're desperate for a post apocalyptic kind of jam, then it'll fit the bit. I just can't really look past how poorly the casting was for the lead.

Plant based zombie isn't a new thing anymore, not since they made The Last Of Us. But I'm not gonna use the myopic glasses to view this movie. Just because it's been done, doesn't mean that it's plagiarism. There are huge differences between this type of zombie and the type of zombies in The Last Of Us. For one thing, it doesn't start with fungus. And in this movie, if you fed on human flesh, you regained your memories for a period of time. I have to admit that this twist is very creative. And the application of that new rule on this movie is very interesting. Although I managed to guess the plot twist half way through the movie, I was still hooked by the story. This is a decent horror thriller romance. Yes, you read that right, romance. Carrie Ann Moss is an amazing actress, she's perfect for this movie.

This zombie movie has a somewhat different feel from most I've seen, and I think I've seen them all. Unlike most that vere down the 'virus spread by blood or saliva' with shambling or running at full speed corpses, craving for brains, this one has a yarn almost completely of its own.
Though it does bare the causes as fungus, much like the last of us, the zombies behave very differently. This does lead to some different behaviours after the outbreak but more as a consequence of the circumstances rather than the fact that they are trying to stave off hoards of flesh eating monsters. I liked that and how it was woven well into the story.
Carrie-Anne Moss pretty much carries this one, Douglas Smith is ok but seems a little out of his depth in portraying the emotions and character the screenplay demands. There actually can't be more than a dozen cast members (save the zombies) so in that sense its a tiny production. Grillo once again proves that he's more than a action star and does well with his rather miniscule part.
I think this one needed to go harder with the story it was telling since it never really reaches the cresendo of action intense suspense or tension that you'd expect from a zombie flick, and whilst the story is a good one, it becomes somewhat obvious fairly early on where the plot is going and what the outcome will be. This isn't ncessarily a bad thing since a twist isn't an imperative, but the payoff for the investment in time isn't esceptional and gvien there is only a limited offer on engrossment, its a bit of a damp squib.
That said I did enjoy it. I was a good perspective on post apolcolyptical events and the standard human tendecy to agressive tribalism.
I've given it a generous 7/10 as a hardcore zombie fan and a such do recommend it. Its probably not going to vie for any serious position with the greats that have come before it, but it's worth a watch.

Behind this not very well done movie is a great story line. Even though I was able to figure out the twist well in advance I still was impressed by the story. The movie even raised some interesting questions about what we would do to survive or help a loved one survive in an post apocalyptic world. Problem is they forgot to make this in any way compelling. There is a total lack of atmosphere for this kind of story and for a potentially dark tale the entire movie is filmed in sunny daylight. The zombie/monsters look like cheap props from a discount store. Worst of all is the bad acting from the lead actor that completely ruins the film. Carrie Ann Moss is excellent but she can't save this.

What sets Die Alone apart is its focus on character development. The film takes its time to explore Ethan and Mae's backstories, revealing their vulnerabilities and motivations. This emotional depth adds a layer of humanity to the otherwise terrifying world they inhabit.
While the zombie elements are present, they serve as a backdrop to the central narrative. The film's true strength lies in its exploration of human resilience and the power of connection. It's a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant film that will stay with you long after the credits roll. Their dynamic is both tense and touching, providing a compelling contrast to the bleak surroundings.

One thing that bothered me about this movie was putting Frank Grillo on the poster, like he is a major character. He is not. He has what is basically a cameo at the very end. The only two characters other than other very secondary ones are Carrie-Anne Moss' and Douglas Smith's.
The story happens in a post-apocalyptic world in which some plant based virus infects people and make them attack and eat each other while slowly turning them into plants. Couchpotatosis, basically. The main character has amnesia and tries to find the girlfriend he lost after a car accident, while this old lady Mae helps him find her. And various things happen until he finds her. That's it.
However, the acting is really good, the sound, the sets, the atmosphere. I switched from "why does Carrie-Anne Moss play in all these stupid movies lately?" to "I got why she chose to play in this one". Douglas Smith did well, too, although I would say I can imagine the guy being like that in real life, so maybe he played himself :) A bit mean to say that.
Basically, an arthouse zombie flick, of which there are a lot for some reason, low budget, but well done.

I started watching it because of Carrie-Anne Moss. It has been too long since I got to see her in any movies and was looking forward to her playing a part again.
However...
I got about a third of the way into the movie and just turned it off. It was a waste. A waste of a movie and huge waste of Carrie-Anne's talent.
Frank Grillo was a bit of a draw for me, too. I liked him in the Marvel movies, so I thought if they had him, along with Moss, this might not be half bad.
But is it ever bad. The pacing is excruciating slow. The characters are run-of-the-mill zombie-movie cardboard cutouts and the zombie effects are 80s-era monster-effects trash.
If you're a diehard fan of the genre, then you might enjoy it. But I'm not. So, to keep me engaged in a movie like this, it needs to have something that stands out in it.
Which this movie did not have, not at all.

* movie starts: female protagonist kills 2 men for no reason
* pushover male protagonist follows female lead, trusting her despite of her actions
* very old truck owned by the 2 dead men has a very cool technology device. It's like everyone is an engineer in this world
* female protagonist trusts young men despite the virus produces the symptoms that he has
* male has amnesia, doesn't remember his identity but very conveniently remembers who was he travelling with, and to where, including the exact location
* the man is conveniently an expert in green energy generation, including mechanics
* the woman gives a loaded gun to the man and says "shoot", but he doesn't, so she's happy he didn't pull the trigger.
* male steals the stolen truck because he doesn't want to wait a few hours after being asleep for days * conveniently, the old truck has a GPS, and enough green electricity for the whole ride
I could go on... it's a disaster.

Very once in a while, a movie comes along with a generic plot and a terrible poster featuring two or three high-profile actors who are past the peak of their careers. These films often seem to come out of nowhere, and as quickly as they appear, they disappear, leaving no memorable impression. I was fairly certain that 2024's Die Alone would fit this pattern perfectly based on what I'd seen so far. However, as a fan of post-apocalyptic zombie films (despite how many there are), I decided to give it a shot.
To my surprise, this movie turned out to be much better than expected. It's not the typical, tiresome zombie story with one-dimensional, annoying characters. Instead, it's a film that starts off feeling generic but improves as it unfolds. The world that Lowell Dean created here is intriguing, and it left me wanting to see more. While the virus concept isn't entirely original, it's presented in an interesting way, as are the few zombies we encounter throughout the film. At its core, however, the movie is about love and the lengths people will go to when their loved ones are in danger.
Carrie-Anne Moss gives a powerhouse performance as "Mae." It's clear she isn't just there for a paycheck. She put genuine effort into crafting this badass character and bringing her to life. Douglas Smith also gives a solid performance, although some irritating aspects of his character made a few of his scenes hard to watch. Frank Grillo has a small role that doesn't quite justify his oversized presence on the poster. Whoever is in charge of the marketing might want to reconsider this approach, as it sets the wrong expectations.
Die Alone is an entertaining watch, with strong performances and an engaging story that offers something to think about. Unfortunately, the poorly designed posters make the movie look cheap and unappealing. I went in with a lot of doubts because of that marketing, but I left feeling genuinely satisfied with what I'd seen. [6.7/10]

Good movie with some nice plot twist, although I kind of figured out a few things prior to the final reveal. It did have a few WTF moments, but that's only because of my military background and being an African American who grew up during segregation. Because of these learning phases in my life, there were like I said a few times that Ethan did some stupid stuff that I would not have done.
Carrie Ann Moss really did carry this film and from what I witnessed, Douglas Smith needs more practice and training in this profession. His range was limited and his acting left a lot to be desired. At one point in this movie, he came off like Frankenstein while searching for Emma.
Really, do people actually walk that stiff with zero arm movement? All in all I did enjoy this, but i can't say that it is something that I might revisit.

I've got a new idea - a premise for a movie: people are transforming into brain-dead, zombie-like creatures because boredom is literally killing their brain cells. The only way to slow down the transformation (or the decomposing of the brains it is) is by reading one of the classic novels from long ago... Honestly, Die Alone is one of those movies with a single idea (the twist), but everything else is poorly executed. To all future zombie movie creators: first, analyze why people enjoy zombie movies. Second, think hard about your concept before making a zombie film. Third, think even harder... Back to Die Alone - it is a dull film that offers nothing we haven't seen a million times before, aside from that one small idea, the "twist", everything else: business as usual, but in a cheap way. Verdict: Boring. Final note: after a very short span of thought-work (a blink of an eye), I decided not to make a movie out of my precious idea...

I looked at all the reviews since there's only 21 so far...
i was trying to figure out why some people didn't like it...obviously, some did...
so here's the conclusion/s i came to.
The people that DIDn't like it wanted more zombie action...the people that liked it wanted a good story. And it was. It was a good story, well told...with some surprising touches for a movie of this sort...fine cinematography being one of them... i guess what EYE like a lot about this movie is how it blended certain dynamics really well, to make something, somewhat, original...in this day and age, with all the stories, pretty much, having been told, all i feel i can hope for is a synthesis of themes that works well...and this was definitely that...i'm surprised at how much i liked it/how good i felt it was. Especially considering all the low ratings... what kinda sucks is knowing that if carrie ann moss wasn't in it, i probably wouldn't have watched it. I like frank grillo, too...but he plays a small part in the story...all i can say, in conclusion, is that i liked it...definitely was worth my time.

Different take on zombie/apocalyptic films and this is one of the best!
Moss was magnificent! Hats off to the writer and director for creating a new approach on these types of genre. It certainly was mind-blowing should deserve a good rating 7-8. This has the potential to be a cult film. Vampire, 50 First Dates, Walking Dead ideas all in one.
If you're looking for a one of a kind zombie film then this one is certainly for you. Hope for a good film is still out there like this gem.
Keep your mind open when it comes to zombie and apocalyptic films and you'll appreciate such films and not the usual stereo-type plots.
8! For great!

While capturing some of the most interesting elements of all post-apocalyptic zombie movies, this film combines excellent characters with an unexpectedly dense mystery. It's easy to spot the tributes this film plays to similar films and video games such as The Last of Us with it's scenery, storyline, music, and pacing. The new elements of this film feel fresh, and the turns are unexpected. Although some of the final elements are foreshadowed in the storyline, the main arc itself is well-paced for each reveal, offering a satisfying blend of conflict that uncovers secrets one at a time without cheating. It's not one beat after another, it's a story told in multiple timelines that slowly converge, and effectively resolve the mysteries. I think you'll like this film, and I promise it won't be a waste of time.
Surprised by this movie , thought it would just be another zombie movie but with a virus take
But it's about love and what we will do to preserve it and protect those we do love
As the movie progressed you get the hook , you would have to be blind not to , but ax you are drawn in you really feel a connection with the characters and their journey
Frank Grillo and his family give a view of what life could be in this dystopian disaster , and although his screen time is very short , any movie he is in is with a view.
Nice to see Carrie Ann Moss again too , altogether a great cast , well directed and well thought out movie.
I highly recommend this movie.

Not what you would expect. Seems that nature decided to wipe out humanity by integrating them into plants. Kind of weird, but when you see the undead plant creatures they are very unique. We are introduced to a young couple who are involved in a single car accident at the beginning and then a desperate search for the young girl who goes missing right after the crash. What happens next is a bizarre series of events touching on time and a fountain of youth in a weird way. Lots of gore, cannibalism, violence, no nudity, some foul language, nothing questionable, but a very interesting story that will blow you away with the major twist at the end. A unique watch. Not for the squeamish at all. A bit too gory. So no young kiddos. Otherwise enjoy!
