Jodie Comer is up for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role at the Tonys this weekend for her play “Prima Facie” currently on Broadway, but the actress had to leave a June 7 matinee performance due to worsening conditions in New York City’s air.
Eyewitnesses noted on Twitter that 10 minutes into the show at Broadway’s Golden Theatre, Comer said she couldn’t breathe and was helped offstage by a stage manager. The play eventually resumed with understudy Dani Arlington taking over for Comer.
Representatives for the play shared the following statement with IndieWire: “Today’s matinee of ‘Prima Facie’ was halted approximately 10 minutes into the performance after Jodie Comer had difficulty breathing due to the poor air quality in New York City because of smoke from the Canadian wildfires. The performance was set to start again from the top with understudy Dani Arlington going on for Ms.

Imagine reading the next “Harry Potter” story before anyone else. English actor Jamie Parker doesn’t have to imagine it — he did it, back when producers were casting the West End premiere of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.”
“There was a thick veil of secrecy over the entire thing, obviously,” Parker recalled on Stagecraft, Variety‘s theater podcast.
At the time, he was in Birmingham playing Sky Masterson in a production of “Guys and Dolls,” he remembered. “They said, ‘Either we bring a script to Birmingham, so there’ll be like a Securicorps guy in a helmet with a bat and a gun — not really — but basically you’d have to sit under supervision reading it. Or you come down to London.”
So Parker headed down to London for a day, where he read the script — written by Jack Thorne, with a story by J.K. Rowling, Thorne and director...

Like the Phantom of the Opera — and “The Phantom of the Opera” — “Love Never Dies” isn’t dead yet.
The musical, mega-composer Andrew Lloyd Webber’s sequel to his record-breaking smash “Phantom of the Opera,” is showing signs of life on the road in the U.S., where the title is turning heads at the box office after a dispiritingly brief premiere engagement on the West End eight years ago.
“We’ve got eight shows on the road right now, and ‘Love Never Dies’ is outselling them all,” said Randy Buck, CEO of Troika Entertainment, the touring musical producer with road versions of “An American in Paris” and “On Your Feet!” among its stable. “Love” is doing so well, in fact, that Buck cops to bigger dreams for the show.
“Broadway is certainly a possibility,” he said. “We are looking at that for early next year. I think we would come in,...

To call Elvis Costello an artistic chameleon is almost too easy. He’s more akin to a Cheshire Cat, appearing and disappearing across the pop music spectrum at will, identifiable only by the sly grin that permeates his work. The breadth of his collaborations are limited only by his own imagination and good taste; over the last two decades he’s played with everyone from the Roots to the Brodsky Quartet, Allen Toussaint to Chet Baker, Marcus Mumford, Roy Orbison, Paul McCartney, Burt Bacharach and — most famously — his crack backing band, the Imposters. So, it makes total sense that he...

Due to the success of the likes of Cinderella, The Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast, Disney has got a slew of live-action remakes of their animated classics coming in the next few years. Several have been fast-tracked into production, such as Tim Burton’s Dumbo, Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin and Jon Favreau’s The Lion King, but one such project has now hit a bump in the road.
After being first linked with the film back in May, Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes is reportedly stepping away from Disney’s planned remake of Pinocchio. Though the American Beauty helmer isn’t known for his kid-friendly movies, Mendes did bring a successful musical adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to the West End, so it looked like he could be the perfect director for Pinocchio. Apparently not, though.
The juiciest part of this story, however, is the potential reason for his leaving the project.

Pericles: Born in a Tempest Conceived and directed by Jordan Reeves Presented by Hunger and Thirst Theatre with the Guerrilla Shakespeare Project at the West End Theatre, NYC November 2-18, 2017
If you have ever dreamed of watching Batman fight in the midst of a Shakespeare production, now is your chance to make that fantasy a reality. How fantasy in the form of storytelling (Batman included) intertwines with our lived realities partly drives Jordan Reeves' imaginative adaptation of Shakespeare's Pericles. Reeves' Pericles: Born in a Tempest both streamlines the sprawling original and weaves in a modern framing narrative in which the Shakespearean text becomes a book, The True Tales of Pericles, given to a woman by her recently deceased father. Of course, Shakespeare, arguably with a collaborator, was himself adapting a well-known medieval romance, the tale of Apollonius of Tyre, primarily the version set down by John Gower in his fourteenth-century...

Eugene, an inner-city teen, escapes the city streets and hides away on a Midwest city rooftop during the Fourth of July holiday. He is found by Holly, a widowed alcoholic, who lives in the secluded rooftop dwelling with her Boston terrier. They commit to spending the day together above the city as they wait for a hopeful resolution to Eugene’s situation. As the day passes, a friendship grows even as their personal realities begin to catch up with them.

Joanna Lumley, Ray Winstone and Richard Wilson are among celebs who will appear in a series of short films which aimed at getting more military veterans into ‘civvy street’.
Video: Veterans Work | What Does An Idea Sound Like?
Downtown Abbey’s Hugh Bonneville, Diy Sos star Nick Knowles and ex-EastEnders Larry Lamb and Michelle Collins also highlight the skills, attitude and knowledge ex-soldiers, sailors and airmen can bring to employers.
Entitled, ‘Veterans Work’, the films, by The Drive Project, were produced to encourage UK businesses to consider veterans as viable options to fill vacancies.
Their release follows a study by Deloitte and the Officers’ Association and the Forces in Mind Trust, which revealed UK plc is failing to realise the potential of veterans, putting ex-military personnel at a disadvantage.
The alarming revelation emerged despite nearly 2,000 British businesses having signing the Armed Forces Covenant – a Ministry of Defence scheme designed...

Paddington 2 not only captures the charm of the original movie, in many ways it surpasses it. Here's our review...
If you saw 2014’s modern Paddington reboot, then you’ll already know what a delightful surprise it was. What's particularly surprising, though, it just how high its sequel soars. It’s a pleasure to say that Paddington 2, coming to us after the sunny perspective of a visiting bear and his adoptive family has been proven more and more unpopular in the real world, is as lovely and brilliant as its predecessor.
As with all origin stories, the first film had a lot to do within the constraints of a family film that had rather a lot to prove to an audience of cynical parents and bored young ‘uns. This film, by contrast, can simply get through by playing in the world it’s built for itself, but yet there...

There is simply no one like Stephen Sondheim. The living legend has arguably had the greatest singular impact on the genre of musical theatre. He’s responsible for some of the most beautiful and complex musicals in existence including Company, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, and Into the Woods. (He also wrote lyrics to Gypsy and West Side Story).
One of his most brilliant and rich works is Follies, originally produced on Broadway in 1971. Follies tells the story of a theatre that once housed a world famous Vaudeville musical revue, now slated for demolition. In an attempt to revisit the past and honour the incredible alumni of the Follies, the owner, Mr. Weismann, holds a reunion prior to the theatre being torn to the ground. Two former Folly couples,...

With the upcoming worldwide release of the modern creature feature comedy Cute Little Buggers I was lucky enough to spend some time with the film’s director Tony Jopia to talk about his influences, bringing the bunnies to life and having fun on set.
How did first get in to filmmaking?
When I was 9 years old I was asked what I wanted to do at school. I remember seeing Airport 1975 (1974) and then not long after another film called the The Poseidon Adventure (1972). They both kind of set a firm seed in my mind that making moves is what I wanted to do. My father used to wake me up at midnight to watch all the creature feature movies that used to appear late at night. I had school the next day yet he would still wake me up at midnight and say, “Come and watch this”. It was the...

Sometimes a thing exists that is so bizarre you just have to shrug and say, “Sure, why not?” In the tradition of slow cinema, the folks behind meditation app Calm have commissioned an eight-hour long film of sheep grazing in a meadow. Brilliantly titled “Baa Baa Land,” the movie’s tag line: is: “The dullest movie ever made? We think so. We hope you do too.”
“’Baa Baa Land’ is the first screen epic entirely starring sheep,” says the trailer in voiceover. “In a world of constant stress and information overload, of anxious days and restless nights, comes the chance at last to pause, to breathe, to calm our racing minds and fretful souls, to sit and stare — at sheep.
